Centaurea cyanus ‘Classic Artistic Mix’
CLASSIC CORNFLOWERS
Centaurea cyanus ‘Classic Artistic Mix’ is a charming old favourite seed strain, much loved by florists, commercial growers, and home gardeners alike.
These old favourites are also known as Cornflowers or Batchelor’s Buttons.
Beloved by gardeners, cut flower growers, and florists alike
‘Classic Artistic Mix’ contains the old-fashioned Cornflowers we know from our Grandma’s gardens.
In a blend of blues, pinks, mauves, plums shades, plus white with bi-coloured flowers.
They give long and profuse blooming, and fine shows in both garden and vase.
Blooms for months
Plants of Centaurea cyanus ‘Classic Artistic Mix’ bloom for months on end – from spring, through summer and autumn.
And they are “Cut and Come Again” flowers.
So the more you cut for the vase, the more productive the plants will be.
With blooms that are beautiful in a vase or bouquet, either fresh or dried.
Bi-coloured Cornflowers
These double pincushion flowers often have either a dark eye or an eye of a contrasting colour.
So they really sparkle in the garden or vase.
And they are borne on tall stems perfect for cutting or for creating a misty, mysterious haze in the garden.
Eco-friendly confetti & dried flowers
Plus the flowers also hold their colour very well when they are dried.
So they are favourites for the production of dried petals for eco-friendly confetti and pot-pourri.
Magnet for bees, butterflies & pollinators
The fiesta of bees, butterflies and valuable pollinating insects that flock to your Cornflowers is just one of the many pleasures they bring to your garden.
Quick & Easy to grow
Plants from Centaurea cyanus ‘Classic Artistic Mix ‘ are very happy planted in either Full Sun or Partial Shade (though will be too lanky in heavy shade).
Plus they are not a bit fussy about soil, cheerfully growing in sandy and even poor soil, as well as in good garden loam.
Though they will object to poorly drained soil.
Water-wise, drought tolerant & great value
So old fashioned Cornflowers give some of the best value going – producing masses of blooms, for months on end, with a minimum of extra water, feeding, or attention from you.
And they are well able to cope with periods of dry or minimal summer watering, and still bloom their heads off.
They are rarely if ever untroubled by any pests and diseases.
Rabbit & deer resistant
Even rabbits and deer are not particularly attracted to Cornflowers, and will usually pass by on their way to something more tasty.
Quick & Easy from seed
Centaurea cyanus ‘Classic Artistic Mix’ are self-sowing garden stalwarts.
They are hardy annual plants, very quick and easy to raise from seed each year / or left to self-sow, and deliver excellent value in double quick time.
Height 50cm – 80cm approx. x 20cm – 40cm approx. Wide.
It is an upright growing plant with attractive greyish, finely cut foliage.
SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY
Suitable for beginners & gardening with kids
Centaurea cyanus ‘Classic Artistic Mix’ seeds can be sown outdoors, directly in the garden, in either spring or autumn.
OR
Sow indoors in a punnet in either spring or autumn for maximum production.
Sow indoors for quick & early flowers: First sow the seeds onto the surface of good quality seed raising mixture, in a punnet.
Then just lightly cover the seed with a fine sprinkling of sieved mix.
Because light is needed for seed germination.
Now moisten the punnet thoroughly by standing it in a shallow water-bath and allowing the moisture to percolate to the top of the mix from below.
Then place the moistened, sown punnet in a warm, well lit position (not in any direct sunlight).
Temperatures of 15-20°C are ideal for optimum and rapid germination.
You can use a heat mat if you have one, but it is not essential as these seeds are willing germinators.
And continue to keep the mix moist but not wet, by misting the surface from a spray water bottle.
A clear plastic cover will also help to prevent moisture loss.
Seeds germinate in approx. 14-21 days.
Once germinated, prick out and grow on in a well aired and lit area before planting out in the garden as established plants. This will ensure maximum plant numbers. Or sow seed directly in the garden in spring.
Seed Count: 200 seeds per pack approx.
(We always aim to exceed the stated seed count and give a generous serve).
