Lagurus ovatus ‘Bunny Tails’ really does produce heads like the fluffy, white, cottontails of little Bunnies.

This beautiful little grass earns the name of Bunny Tails, as that is just what the heads look like.

Bunny soft to touch – kids love them

And feel like too – the flower heads are delightfully soft to stroke (kids love them)
And the soft foliage is a treat to run your hands through.

Essential for floristry 

Heads of Lagurus ovatus ‘Bunny Tails’ are a staple for floristry, bouquets and arrangements.
They are lovely in all their natural fluffy whiteness.
But they can also be easily dyed to any colour needed.
It is also commonly called “Bouquet Grass” for obvious reasons.

Delightful as a garden texture & filler

This soft little annual grass looks great filling in texture by weaving amongst other flowers and permanent plantings.
It creates a soft, delicate background texture for other flowers and plants, without taking over.
And the foliage is fine and pale green – a great colour foil.

Easy to scatter seed in the garden

It is easy in the spring to just to scatter the seed around where you want it, then let it get on with creating a long lasting display.

Popular & easy crop for Flower Farmers

‘Bunny Tails’ is ridiculously easy to grow, and so much used by florists – it is a soda as a commercial crop.

Very long blooming

It also keeps producing heads for a very long season – all over summer – it is not a one head wonder.

Harvest both fresh or dried

Harvested heads dry very well – just hang upside down in a dry, dark place.
Heads first open green, then go cotton white, then finally buff – all useful.

Simply scatter in a sunny place

‘Bunny Tails’ enjoys sunny spots.
So scatter the seed, rake in gently, keep gently watered – and 2-3 weeks later you will have a haze of the softest texture.

Petite self-sowing annual grass

Lagurus ovatus ‘Bunny Tails’ grows as a fine grassy tuft 50cm High  x 30cm, Wide approx.

Hardy in heat & dry – water-wise & drought hardy

It is happy in a wide range of well drained conditions, especially in sand.
(Do not allow it to go to seed in coastal and inland sandy areas as it may escape into nature).
It is native to hot, dry and coastal regions around the Mediterranean, including northern Africa and southern Europe.

Rabbit & deer resistant

Rabbits and deer tend to leave mature plants alone, as the fine grassy foliage is quite fibrous and not juicy.
However they will nibble the foliage of young plants, and of course have a go at anything if they are starving.

SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY

Very suitable for beginners & gardening with kids

Lagurus ovatus can be started very quickly and easily from seed. 

It can be very successfully sown direct into the garden in spring or autumn.
Gently rake into the surface of fine soil but do not bury.
Keep moist with fine watering until sprouting.
OR
Started early in late winter a punnet or tray if you want to be harvesting early Bunny Tails.
Seedlings do not like being too disturbed when transplanting – so sow seed in little individula clumps in deeper trays, or a small clump in a deeper individual plant tube (forestry tube).
They are then easy to plant out without root disturbance.

Sow indoors for quick plants & early plumes: First sow the seed on surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Then gently press the seeds onto the surface of the mix, to ensure good contact.

But do not cover as these seeds germinate better with light.

Then place the sown punnet into a shallow water bath and allow the moisture to percolate up through the mix from the bottom to the surface.

Now place the moist punnet in a warm, well-lit position (not in any direct sun).

Temperatures of 18-21°C approx. are best for rapid and optimum germination.
A warm window-sill or well-lit corner is fine.
Cooling down at night actually helps germination – so best not use a heat mat.

Adding a clear plastic cover or plastic bag helps to retain moisture in the punnet.

And continue to keep the punnet moist by spraying the surface of the mix with a fine spray water bottle as required.

Seedlings emerge in approx. 10-12 days.
