Echinacea purpurea ‘Mellow Yellows’
MELLOW YELLOW CONEFLOWERS

Echinacea purpurea ‘Mellow Yellows’ make happy treats in the garden.

Rays of petals in soft yellows

With fine rays of petals in a range of soft yellow shades, from cream, through lemon, to egg-yolk yellow tones.
So the common name of ‘Mellow Yellow Coneflowers’ is a perfect description.

Showy mahogany-copper cones

The lovely rays of petals are ringed around showy mahogany-copper central cones, which last long after the flowers are finished.
So the cones are very decorative, either left on the plant to make a show long after the petals have dropped.
Or harvested and dried for floral work.
So gardeners often leave the cones to stand through winter, providing both visual structure in the garden over the cold months, and welcome feed for small native seed eating birds such as Finches.

Fragrant flowers

This new form of Echinacea is a result of modern cross breeding.
By crossing Echinacea purpurea with the yellow and fragrant Echinacea paradoxa – breeders have created delightful soft yellow shades, and gently sweetly fragrant flowers.
So gardeners have taken to ‘Mellow Yellows’ with joy.

Compact grower for small garden & pots

Plants of ‘Mellow Yellows’ are compact and neat growing, making them very popular for small garden spaces or as a feature in pots, especially with them being such long bloomers.

Prolific & long bloomer

‘Mellow Yellows’ are prolific and particularly long bloomers, giving a procession of flowers through the warm months of summer until late in autumn.
Blooms come on well branched stems, and these strong stems do not need any staking.
Flowers last particularly well in the garden, as well as cut for a vase or floristry.

Excellent cut flowers for floristry

‘Mellow Yellows’ Coneflowers give excellent cut flowers, to use either fresh or dried.
Blooms last well in a vase, and are easy to harvest with strong, clean stems.
While the cones are delightful in arrangements, either used fresh or dried – they are everlasting when dried.

Easy unfussy growers

Hardy Echinacea purpurea ‘Mellow Yellows’ enjoy Full Sun to Light Shade, and are very unfussy, low maintenance plants.
Because this new garden hybrid has inherited the hardiness of both wild parents.
S0 ‘Mellow Yellow’ grows happily in just about any well drained soil.

Once established it is a water-wise plant, that needs only minimal extra watering, and can survive dry spells well.
It is robustly frost hardy, but can also tolerate humidity in the air.
Pests or diseases rarely if ever trouble Echinacea.
And even rabbits and deer tend to leave it way down on their menu card.

Elegant 80cm H x 45cm neat foliage clump.

SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY
Suits beginners & gardening with kids

Sow at any time of year in a punnet indoors / or scatter in garden late winter & spring or late summer & autumn.

Indoors for quick plants & early flowers: First sow the seeds in a punnet on surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Then pat gently to ensure good contact with the mix.
Light is needed for germination with these seeds, so only barely cover the seeds.

Now thoroughly moisten the punnet by standing in a shallow water bath.
And allowing the moisture to percolate to the surface of the mix from below.

Then stand the punnet in a warm, well-lit position (not in any direct sunlight)
And continue to keep moist by misting with a spray water bottle.
Covering the punnet with a clear plastic lid or plastic bag will help to maintain consistent, even moisture.

Temperatures of 20-24°C approx. are ideal for rapid and optimum germination.

Germination may start in just 5 days and may take up to 20 days.
Echinacea will flower in 11 to 15 weeks from sowing so flowers are possible in the first year grown from seed.

Prick out the seedlings once they large enough to handle.
And transplant into 7.5cm pots to grow on before planting out in spring in well drained soil.

Seed Count: 8 seeds per pack approx.
(We always aim to exceed the stated seed count, and give a generous serve).
