Alcea rosea ‘Chater’s Double Golden’ HOLLYHOCK –
One of the larger varieties of this biennial plant, growing up to 2.5 metres in height. Its very attractive double yellow flowers are excellent for flower arrangements. Grows best in deeply cultivated fertile soils in sunny positions and flowers over summer. Add lime if soil is too acidic.
Sow Alcea rosea ‘Chater’s Double Golden’ HOLLYHOCK onto the surface of moist well-drained seed raising mixture. Cover lightly with 2mm of mix. Light is needed for seed germination. 15-21 degrees C. is optimum temperature if using a heat mat. Germination takes apporx. 14-21 days. Once germinated place in a well aired and lit area. Or sow directly into the garden in spring. Very easy to germinate.
Prefer a well-drained soil in sun to partial shade. Very water-wise plants. Heat and drought resistant. Frost hardy. Not fussy about soil type. Respond well to blood and bone fertiliser. Flower the second year after sowing seed, or first year if seed sown early.
