Alcea rosea var. Nigra ‘King Henry Eighth’

Alcea rosea var. Nigra ‘King Henry Eighth’ bears intense, single, deep red-purple flowers that are near black, on dramatic, tall flower spikes. It’s easy to grow and perfect for planting in groups at the back of a sunny border. For best results, grow in moist but well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Cut down  after flowering to encourage fresh basal growth. Full Sun, Partial Shade H: 150cm – 200cm W: 30cm – 45cm


Sow Alcea rosea var. nigra ‘King Henry Eighth’ onto the surface of moist well-drained seed raising mixture. Cover lightly with 2mm. of mix. Light is needed for seed germination. 15-21°C optimum temperature if using a heat mat. Germination takes approx. 14-21 days. Once germinated place in a well aired and lit area. Or sow directly into the garden in spring. Very easy to germinate.

Plant Direct-
Prefer a well-drained soil in Sun to Partial Shade. Very water-wise plants. Heat and drought resistant. Frost hardy. Not fussy about soil type.  Respond well to blood and bone fertilizer. Flower the second year after sowing seed, or first year if seed sown early.
