Antirrhinum majus ‘Potomac White’

Antirrhinum majus ‘Potomac White’ is one of the highly successful Potomac range of Snapdragons.

Specially bred for long, tapering flower stems, early & long picking

The Potomacs are so successful because they have been specially bred for elegant, long, tapering spires of flowers. With the flowers perfectly spaced along the stems.
Plus an early starting, long, and prolific flowering period – through spring, summer and autumn.
So of course florists adore them.

Florists adore graceful, stylish ‘Potomac White’ Snapdragons

There is nothing dumpy about graceful, tall, elegant Antirrhinum majus ‘Potomac White’.
The flower stems can be up to a metre tall.
So florists find it smashing for wedding arrangements, with pristine, snow white, green tipped towers of flowers.

Long lasting, elegant garden display

And it is just as impressive for long lasting garden displays.
Antirrhinum majus ‘Potomac White’ is bred to be equally at home in the open garden, in the commercial flower field, or for tunnel house production.

Tough go-er in wind & heat

The flower spires are exceptionally weather hardy, as well as heat resistant.
Making it an excellent performer in the open flower field or the home garden.
And it has been bred to perform best in warmer conditions, so is a sound, reliable variety for Australian conditions.

Edible flowers

Snapdragon flowers are deliciously edible and make a sweet treat in salads, stir fries, fruit salads, drinks and as garnish.
So plant some in your veggie patch for both nibbling and cutting for vases.
Or just for letting the kids “snap” the Dragon’s jaws.
Kids adore plucking the flowers and working the dragon’s mouth.

Deer & rabbit resistant

Happily, Snapdragons are not high on the menu list for rabbits and deer, who usually pass them by for tastier fodder.

Gorgeous in a pot too

Plant Antirrhinum majus ‘Potomac White’ in Sun to Part Shade.
It also suits a wide range of soils, including sandy or clay, as long as the position is well drained.
And they are particularly lovely in a container or decorative pot because of their pristine, sparkling white colouring, and exceptionally long blooming season.

Quick & easy to raise from seed & fast to bring to bloom

Antirrhinum majus is actually a short lived perennial and will go on blooming for several years if left in the garden over winter.
But because they are so quick and easy to raise from seed, and fast to bring to flower from seed, they are often grown as annual instead.
Personally I leave mine in the garden from year to year, and just trim them back to reshoot each spring.

100cm. High sparkling white, tapering spires x 20cm. Wide of neat, deep green foliage.
Though if well fed these dramatic spires can even reach 120cm. high.

Suitable for beginners & gardening with kids

Sow Antirrhinum majus ‘Potomac White’ at any time indoors in a punnet for an early start with flowers / Or scatter directly in garden in autumn, late winter and spring.

Sow indoors for quick & early plants: First sow the seeds on the surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Then pat the surface lightly to ensure good contact of seeds to the mix, but do not cover.
Because these seeds need light to germinate.

Now thoroughly moisten the sown punnet by standing it in a shallow water bath and allow the moisture to percolate to the surface of the mix from below.

Then place it in a warm, well lit position (not in direct sunlight).

Because temperatures of 15-25C are best for optimum and rapid germination.
You can also use a heat mat if you have one.
Though it is not essential as these seeds are willing germinators.

Then continue to keep moist by misting from a spray water bottle.

Seeds germinate in approx. 10-15 days.

Once the first set of true leaves have developed – then prick out the seedlings into individual pots and grow on ready for planting out into the garden or field.

Seed Count: 15 seeds approx. per pack.
(Seeds of this new release are scarce but we always aim to exceed the stated seed count and give a generous serve).
