Armeria maritima alba, Morning Star White Thrift: This tuff, sun loving perennial is found on sea cliffs and coastal areas and is durable in most sunny locations. The white pompom flowers are borne on short stems above neat mounds of fine slender deep green foliage. The late spring floral display goes over many weeks and can be prolonged by deadheading the spent blooms for repeat flowering. Lovely companion for Dianthus or English Pinks when planted at the front of border . Great cut flower that can be dried successfully. Frost and dry hardy. Enjoys full sun and good drainage. Not fussy on soil type. 15cm H x 30cm W.
Sow Armeria seeds indoors Sept to Nov. Prior to sowing soak seeds for 6-8 hours in water. Drain. Surface sow onto moist, well-drained, good quality seed raising mix. Just cover seed with a sprinkling of mix . Place in a propagator or seal in a polythene bag to maintain humidity. Ideal temp. 16-18°C. Germination takes 2-3 weeks approx. If germination does not occur , place seed tray in a polythene bag in the fridge at 4°C for 3-4 weeks then return to warmth. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to 8cm pots and grow on in cooler conditions, an unheated poly house is ideal. Acclimatize and plant out when well grown.
