Callistephus chinensis ‘Matsumoto Red Striped’ has clouds of cherry red double blooms.
With each flower delicately flecked and striped with white.
So the cherry red clouds of blooms seems to glisten with light.
I am not normally a striped flower person, but these are very pretty and not the slightest garish.

With masses of flowers shading through cherry from deepest to softer, as individual flowers open and mature at different times.

The whole range of Matsomoto China Asters have been bred for hardiness, disease resistance, and profuse commercial flowering. And no prizes for guessing they are the darling of the huge cut flower market in Japan, where floristry flowers are highly valued.
‘Matsumoto Red Striped’ us highly prized because it is so unusual, and the colour is so lovely.

Superb in garden & vase

Stems are long and strong so it has good wind resistance and it has a very upright growing habit.
So it does not sprawl about it the garden.
Provides bucket loads of cut flowers, and it looks striking planted behind red or white roses.

Quick from seed to flower

Callistephus chinensis ‘Matsumoto Red Striped’ is a very easily, quickly grown annual.
And it germinates rapidly and generously from seed.
Plus it is quickly large enough to transplant out into the garden.
Of course it will flower the first year from seed.
Because from seed sowing to flowering is approx. 3 to 3.5 months.
Commercial cut flower farmers like to sow it in autumn for established plants and flower production as early as possible in spring. Then continues to bloom right through for many months until the end of autumn.

Easy to grow in the garden

Plant ‘Matsumoto Blue’ in Sun to a little Part Shade.
And it is perfect for both pot display and garden use.
‘Matsumoto Red Striped’ is not a water-hungry plant. It is perfectly happy with average garden watering, and prefers well-drained soil, with an occasional deep watering as hot weather requires.

SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY

Suitable for beginners & gardening with kids

Sow Callistephus chinensis ‘Matsumoto Red Striped’ at any time indoors in punnets / or scatter directly in garden in winter-early spring.

Because China Asters germinate easily both in the garden and indoors.

INDOORS: First sow seeds on the surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Now barely cover the seeds with mix / vermiculate / fine grit, and only to a maximum depth of the seed’s own diameter.
Because these seeds need light to germinate.

Now keep your sown punnet moist, in a warm, well-lit position (but not in direct sunlight).
A bright window-sill or corner is fine.
You can use a temperature controlled heat mat if you have one.

Because temperatures of 18-21C are optimum for rapid and thorough germination.

Seedlings emerge in approx. 7-14 days.
