Callistephus chinensis ‘Matsumoto White Tipped Blue’ has double white blooms, with each petal lusciously tipped with rich blue shades, in large, densely clustered heads.

‘Matsumoto White Tipped Blue’ has been bred for hardiness, disease resistance, and profuse commercial flowering, like all the Matsumoto series of China Asters.

So no prizes for guessing it is the darling of the huge cut flower market in Japan, where floristry flowers are so highly valued.
It also has good wind resistance because the stems are so long and strong.
Plus it has a very upright growing habit – making it good for both garden and vase.
And it does not sprawl about it the garden.

Quick from seed to flower

Callistephus chinensis ‘Matsumoto White Tipped Blue’ is a very easily, quickly grown annual, germinating rapidly and generously from seed.
Plus it quickly grows large enough to transplant out into the garden.
So of course it will flower the first year from seed – because from seed sowing to flowering is just  some 3 to 3.5 months.

Blooms right through for many months

Commercial cut flower farmers like to sow their seeds in autumn, for flower production early in spring.
It then continues to bloom right through for many months.

So it is perfectly happy with average garden watering, and prefers well-drained soil, with an occasional deep watering as hot weather requires.

SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY

Suitable for beginners & gardening with kids

Sow seeds of Callistephus chinensis ‘Matsumoto White Tipped Blue’ at any time indoors in punnets / or scatter directly in garden in winter-early spring.

Because China Asters germinate easily both in the garden and indoors.

Sow indoors for early quick plants: First sow seeds on the surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Now barely cover the seeds with mix / fine vermiculite / fine grit, but only to a maximum depth of the seed’s own diameter.
Because these seeds need light to germinate.

Now keep your sown punnet moist, in a warm, well-lit position (but not in direct sunlight).
A bright window-sill or corner is fine.
You can also use a temperature controlled heat mat if you have one.

Because temperatures of 18-21C are optimum for rapid and thorough germination.

Then seedlings will begin to emerge in approx. 7-14 days.
