Campanula garganica ‘Filigree’
FILIGREE STARS

Campanula garganica ‘Filigree’ bears masses of enchanting violet-blue stars, each with a cheeky pale eye.

Enchanting violet-blue stars

‘Filgree’ carpets itself so densely with the star shaped blooms, that it is hard to fit a pin between the violet-blue flowers.

Each sparkling with a cheeky pale eye

And the whole mat of flowers seems to sparkle, as each star has that paler eye that twinkles at you.

Prolific bloomer – Carpet of flowers & colour

Campanula garganica ‘Filigree’ is such a massed, prolific bloomer that it creates a carpet of shimmering violet-blue colour.

More intense colour than the old version

And ‘Filigree’ is a more intensely coloured version of the original.
The old, wild, original Campanula garganica is much paler.
So ‘Filigree’ has enhanced colouring.

Long blooming over summer & autumn

‘Filigree’ not only covers itself in flowers, but it does so for a long time – beginning in early-summer and carrying on in autumn.

Compact mound of dense ground-hugging foliage

So it is perfect for edging the front of a garden bed, filling and spilling, cascading over the edge of a decorative pot, or making a low carpet of groundcover.
Each plant is approx. 10-15cm. high x 30cm. wide.

Perfect to edge a garden, fill a pot or mass plant for groundcover

As each plant creates a dense mound of low foliage, with the flowers sitting jauntily on top and winking up at you.
So plant a row to form an edge or mass plant make a groundcover carpet.

Very pretty spilling over an edge

They will also spill over an edge very prettily – like a cascade of violet stars and pretty foliage.

Neat and never invasive as a groundcover or edge

They are neat and never invasive when mass planted, and are too low to ever smother companion plants.

Easy to grow & low care

Campanula garganica ‘Filigree’ is easy to grow and low maintenance.
It is virtually disease and pest free, and almost never needs any trimming.

Quick to grow & adaptable

Plus it flowers in the first year from seed.
So for a trouble-free, frost hardy groundcover or edge – plant in a range of positions – from Dappled Shade to Full Sun.
Though in hot districts it does better in Dappled Shade or where it gets some shade in the afternoon – making it perfect to plant as a groundcover or edge under taller plants.
Or it can also take full sun in cooler climates.

Very frost hardy

Easy-going ‘Filigree’ is very frost hardy, and can tolerate temperatures down to -20°C.

Happily grows in a wide range of soils

‘Filigree’ will bob along in a wide range of soils – from acid to alkaline soil pH, and from sandy to garden loam.
They do relish lime (making them ideal underplanting for roses) – so in acid soils, dress with some Dolomite Lime whenever you do the roses.

Only needs average garden water

Campanula garganica ‘Filigree’ is not a water-guzzler.
So in garden loam it requires only normal, average garden watering, and no special attention.
Though it will need more regular watering in very sandy soils.
But it does not enjoy being water-logged, or being planted in poorly drained soil.

Rabbit & deer resistant

While no plant is completely immune to a starving beast, at least Campanula garganica ‘Filigree’ is  not high on the menu list for rabbits and deer, though in a famine they may have a nibble.

Bees & pollinators frolic in the stars

While both native and honey-bees are attracted to the blue stars, loving to feast on all the nectar inside.

SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY
Suitable for beginners & gardening with kids

Sow Campanula garganica ‘Filigree’ seeds at any time indoors when suitable temperatures can be provided (18-22°C).
OR
Sow directly in the garden in spring, when the soil has warmed.

Sow indoors for quick & early plants: First sow the seeds in a punnet on the surface of good quality seed raising mix.

Tip for sowing very fine seeds: The seeds of Campanula garganica are very fine.
So sieve some seed raising mix. Pop a pinch or two in the bag with the seeds. Shake well to gather up the seeds, and then sow the lot. This will make it easier for you to gather up and distribute the seeds evenly in the punnet.

Do not cover the seeds, but just gently pat the seeds onto the surface of the mix to ensure good contact.
Because these seeds need light to germinate.

Now thoroughly moisten the sown punnet by standing it in a shallow water bath.
And allow the moisture to percolate up to the surface of the mix from below.

Then cover the seed punnet with clear plastic cover to help maintain consistent moisture.
And place in a warm, well-lit position (but NOT in direct sunlight).
Continue to keep the punnet consistently moist by misting regularly from a spray water-bottle.

Temperatures of 18-22°C approx. are ideal for rapid and optimum germination.
You can use a heat mat if you have one, but it is not essential, as these seeds are quick and easy to germinate.

Germination occurs in approx. 14-28 days, but can begin as early as 7 days.
It is normal for these seeds to stagger their germination (for safety) – so do not discard the punnet too quickly, as more seeds will likely come later.

Pot on seedlings once a set of true leaves appear.
Then harden off and mature before finally planting out in the garden.

Seed Count; 30 seeds per pack approx.
(We always aim to exceed the stated seed count, and give a generous serve).
