Campanula takesimana fl. pl.
DOUBLE KOREAN BELLFLOWERS

Campanula takesimana fl. pl. is the new and unusual DOUBLE form of a tough old favourite, Korean Bellflowers.

New double form of an old favourite

Korean Bellflowers have been garden favourites for generations – for both their beauty and their hardiness.
But this new form is especially enchanting with double bells instead of the usual singles.

Graceful arching stems of large dangling double bells

Campanula takesimana fl. pl. bears graceful, arching stems with large double bells dangling all along.
Like tiers of flouncy ballgowns.
The big blooms have pointed petals, with a double petticoat lining inside each bell – WOW.

Lovely mix of colours – Purple, lavender, cherry, pink, cream & white

So this seed mix contains a range of all the lovely colours we always love in Campanula takesimana.
From rich purples to softest lavenders; a wide range of pinks from deep cherry to shell pinks and salmons; plus soft creams to pure whites.
Flowers are also usually spotted inside with deep maroon.

Excellent cut flowers for floristry

Campanula takesimana fl. pl. also provides excellent cut flowers for floristry vases.
The bells are large and showy with petals of a substantial waxy texture; and the stems strong.
While their long, arching shapes gives grace to floral arrangements of all types.

Harvesting for long vase life

For long vase life it is best to cut the stems when just a few buds have opened.
Then the bells will continue to open along the stem while in the vase.
They last very well in water – usually 10-14 days even just in fresh water with no preservative.

Tough, hardy & easy to grow

Campanula takesimana fl. pl. is very well suited to Australian conditions and is a willing, robust, easy grower.
This lovely double form is equally as easy as the older single forms.

Hardy in both winter frost & summer humidity

It is both frost hardy and tolerant of humid summers.

Tolerates a wide range of soils including clay

Plus copes with a wide range of soils – from sandy to garden loam and on into clay.
And tolerating a wide range of soil pH from acid to alkaline.

Water-wise plant

Campanula takesimana fl. pl. is not a water-guzzler, and requires only normal, average garden watering to thrive.
Though it does not approve of long drought.

Copes with shade well

This double form also grows happily in a wide range of light conditions – from Shade; through Part Shade and Dappled Sun; to Full Sun positions (though in very hot areas a little afternoon shade is preferred, and will keep the long-lasting flowers looking lovely).

Virtually fool-proof – Untroubled by pests & diseases

Campanula takesimana fl. pl. is rarely if ever troubled by any pests or diseases, including rabbits and deer.

Though bees love the bells

The double petticoat flower formation does not prevent the bees from having a ball inside the bells.

Spreads with a will if treated too kindly

Double Korean Bellflowers are tough, easy, low maintenance perennials – so it does not need pampering.
They form a dense groundcover of basal foliage, from which the tall flowering stems bloom through from late spring, summer and into autumn.
So do not treat them too kndly.

Useful robust grower for covering ground

So they are very useful for background planting and naturalizing where you want to cover some ground, carpeting under trees and shrubs, or binding a bank.
But do not plant your tiny treasures amongst it or they may be swamped.

60-75cm. High when in arching bloom through late sporing, summer and autumn. Creating a carpet as wide as you want it to be.

SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY

Suits beginners & gardening with kids

Seeds of Campanula trachelium fl. pl. can be sown at any time of year when suitable temperatures are available (18-25°C).

Seeds can be scattered directly in the garden.
OR
For optimum germination sow in a punnet indoors.

Sow indoors for quick & early plants: First scatter the seeds on the surface of good quality potting mix in a punnet.

Then gently pat the surface to ensure seeds have good contact with the mix.
But do not cover the seeds with mix, as these seeds need light for germination.

Now thoroughly moisten the mix by standing the punnet in a shallow water bath.
And allowing the moisture to percolate to the surface of the mix from below.

Then place the moist, sown punnet in a warm, well-lit position (not in any direct sunlight as this will dry the seeds out).
Temperatures of 18-25°C are best for optimum germination.

A “pretend winter” can also improve germination rate & speed

However the rate and speed of germination can also be improved by giving a short period of chilling after sowing.
So wrap the moist, sown paunnet in cling-wrap or a plastic bag, and lace in the fridge (not freezer) for 4-6 weeks.

Then remove, unwrap, re-moisten and place in the warm, well-lit position .

Continue to keep the punnet consistently moist by misting from a spray water bottle.
Covering the punnet with clear cover or plastic bag will also help to maintain necessary consistent moisture and prevent drying out.

Seedlings begin to emerge in approx. 14-28 days.

Seed Count: 30 seeds per pack approx.
(We always aim to exceed the stated seed count and give a generous serve).
