The Croatian Bellflower is a dainty and very pretty little plant – ideal for small gardens, front edges or flower beds, and delightful in a pot.
As long and slender bells dangle from 15cm. arching stems above a neat, rosette of foliage.

However it is very dry hardy, once established, and much tougher than its dainty and pretty looks suggest.

Native to deciduous woodland

It is after all a native of rocky places in deciduous woodlands on the Istrian Peninsula in Croatia – an area with very well drained, alkaline soils; hot, dry summers; and frosty winters.
But sadly it is now quite scarce in the wild due to changing land use and development.

Cascades of elegant bells in spring & summer

Although the plant is a compact, neat clump-forming perennial, taking up very little space – it puts up a great show of the cascading long bells during spring and summer.
And the blooming season can be extended even further by deadheading (though the plant wont mind if you don’t).

Plant in sun or shade

The natural habitat for Campanula tommasiniana is throughout deciduous woodlands, so it is well used to growing in either Full Sun, Part Shade or Shade, depending where it is in the woods. It is not fussy.

Enjoys alkaline to neutral soil

While in the garden or pot it will grow happily in a wide range of soils including clay and average garden loam, providing it has some lime. It enjoys an alkaline to neutral pH.

Frost hardy

Campanula tommasiniana is also frost hardy and naturally adapted to frosty winters.

Hardy evergreen perennial groundcover or pretty edge

The Croatian Bellflower makes a really pretty front edge to a garden bed or path.
And can be used as a groundcover when mass planted.

Approx. 20cm. High in flower x 45cm. Wide of low, ground hugging foliage.

SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY
Suitable for beginners & gardening with kids

Seeds of Campanula tommasiniana can be sown at any time of year indoors, whenever suitable temperatures are available.
OR
Scatter directly in the garden during late winter & early spring.

Sow indoors for quick & early plants: First scatter the seeds on surface of good quality potting mix in a punnet or seed tray.
Then press gently to ensure good contact with the mix.
But don’t cover the seed, or only sprinkle it very lightly with finely sieved seed raising mix or fine vermiculite.
Because these seeds need light for germination.

Now thoroughly moisten the punnet by standing it in a shallow water bath, and allowing the moisture to percolate to the surface of the mix from below.

Then place the sown, moist punnet in a well-lit position, but not in any direct sunlight – as this will dry out the seeds.

Temperatures of 15-20C are best for optimum and rapid germination.

Continue to keep consistently moist by misting from a spray water-bottle regularly.
Covering the punnet with a clear plastic lid will also help to maintain necessary consistent moisture.

Seedlings emerge in approx. 14-28 days.
