Centranthus coccinea, Jupiter’s Beard  – Valerian: Easy to grow from seed and very long flowering this dark red form of Kiss-Me-Quick will flower in the first season when sown in spring. The flowers are sweetly fragrant and attract both birds and bees to the garden and make a wonderful ’Old Fashioned’ cut flower. They appear in dense cluster of dark red plumes on tall fleshy stems during late spring summer. The plant forms a handsome, bushy mound, with succulent like, mid green glaucous leaves. Not fussy on soil type, enjoys full sun to light shade, both frost and dry hardy. 90 cm  H x 90 cm W.

Sowing Advice

Sow Centranthus seeds at any time on to surface of moist, good quality seed raising mix.. Just cover with mix to seeds own depth. Place in an unheated poly house or indoors on heat bed at 18-20 degrees C. Germination takes approximately 21-30 days . Slower in cooler weather. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to 8 cm  pots and grow on. Acclimatize and plant out in late spring with 30cm spacing, Can be sown directly  October –Dec. Sow 2 mm deep, thin to 30 cm spacing.
