Stunning blue thistle heads the size of a saucers are produced in spring, summer.These make excellent cut flowers both in the vase and for drying. The silver grey foliage is produced along broad fleshy edible leaf stalks. These stately perennials will reach a height of 2.4m. They make wonderful contrast plants in the garden. Completely edible. Dry and frost hardy. Enjoys full sun, well drained soil.
Sow seed into individual small pots or cavity trays in late winter early spring. Use good quality seed raising mix and cover the seed to its own depth and place in an unheated poly house. Seed should emerge in 6-8 weeks. Plant out in garden once there is no danger of frost. Once established Cardoon’s are totally frost and dry hardy.
