Dierama pulcherrimum Mixed Berry Colours
BERRIES & ICE-CREAM FAIRY FISHING RODS
Dierama pulcherrimum Mixed Berry Colours bear graceful arching stems, swaying in the breeze. With dangling bells in a mix of strawberry, raspberry and blackberry colours, plus the ice-cream on top of white bells added into the seed mix.
These are seeds gathered from the best coloured Fairy Fishing Rods in our garden.
Arching flower wands sway in the breeze
Pulcherrimum means beautiful in botanical Latin speak. So this plant is very well named.
While the arching flower wands resemble a small fishing rod bending under the weight of a fairy’s fish, as they sway in the breeze.
Hence the common name of Fairy Fishing Rods.
Spectacular with flower bells & evergreen, elegant foliage
Dierama pulcherrimum Mixed Berry Colours creates clumps of evergreen, fine, tall sword like foliage to 80cm tall.
So the clump provides an architectural statement in the garden all year round, even when it is not in flower.
Though flowering season is the spectacle of course.
Plus the foliage clumps thicken up and improve with each year, to create an ever more stunning flower display in early summer.
Obliging & hardy to grow
Dierama pulcherrimum clumps enjoy Full Sun or Light Shade.
They are very hardy and obliging.
And most garden soils types are acceptable.
These evergreen perennials are easy, dry hardy and water-wise once established.
Though once you have your clump settled in, do not be tempted to disturb and divide – no matter how hard your best friend begs – as they can resent being dug and divided.
So it makes an evergreen perennial clump 1.2m. High in flower x 1m. Wide of arching, fountain foliage.
SEED SOWING ADVICE: EASY
Seed can be sown at any time indoors when suitable temperatures can be provided.
Sow indoors for quick plants: Seed can be sown at any time in a punnet / or small individual little pots, using a good quality seed raising mix.
Then cover the seeds with sieved seed raising mix to a depth of approx. 5mm.
Now thoroughly moisten the sown punnet by standing it in a shallow water bath and allowing the water to percolate up through the mix from below to the surface.
Then place the punnet in a warm, well lit position (not in direct sunlight).
Continue to keep moist by misting from a spray water bottle.
Temperatures of 15-20 degrees C. are best for rapid and optimum germination.
Seedlings begin to appear in approx. 30 days.
But do not discard the punnet as some seedlings may be slower. This is a natural trick of the plant to give the baby seedlings a sporting chance of emerging into a favourable period of weather.
Seed Count: 20 seeds per pack approx.
(We always aim to exceed the stated seed count, and give a generous serve).
