Echinops tienschanicus – Imposing tall perennial which forms a large grey rosette of foliage in the first year. Then branched stems emerge in the 2nd year to form tennis ball sized, spiky heads, all summer these slowly change from silver to pale blue and are loved by bees and butterfly’s. Excellent to cut and dry for a winter display. Recently discovered in the wild this rare and incredibly tall plant is perfect for the back of the border. Tolerates most soils, even poorer, well drained and in in full sun 1.8m x 1m
Sow Echinops seeds in good quality compost or seed raising mix at any time. Lightly cover with compost to their own depth. If using a seed tray choose one with a deep cell as the seedlings need a lot of root room. Place in a propagator or cover with a plastic lid in a warm place. We recommend germinating at 15-20 degrees C. keep moist at all times, but do not saturate. Germination in 14 to 30 days. Pot on seedlings to harden off and mature before finally planting out in the garden.
