Eryngium proteiflorum

Very large blooms looking like shining, silver-sea green Proteas, make Eryngium proteiflorum a very striking garden performer.
A handsome silvery foliage rosette just adds to the visual value and garden contrast.

Harvest the strong flower stems for excellent cut flowers. Which you can use either fresh or dried.

Eryngium proteiflorum basks blissfully in Full Sun.
It has a great tolerance to heat, and is a very water-wise plant.
And has the reputation for being “iron tough”.

Hardy in frost, dry, heat, salt.

Copes poor soils, including sandy, coastal.

Evergreen perennial clump.

Blooms 1m H x foliage rosette 60cm W.


Sow at any time of year in punnets indoors / or scatter in garden winter-early spring. Seeds need cold.

Indoors: Sow in punnets on surface of good quality seed raising mix. Press gently into surface. Barely cover. Keep moist in well-lit spot at 18-22°C.

Seeds germinate in approx. 5-30 days.

Prick out as seedlings as soon as possible to larger pots. The seedlings quickly form long tap roots.

If shy to germinate after 4 weeks. Then cling wrap punnet & place in fridge (not freezer) for 4-6 weeks. Then unwrap & return to well-lit warm place.
