CALIFORNIAN POPPY WHITE

Eschscholzia californica ‘Alba’ one of the loveliest of all the Californian Poppies.
All Californian Poppies are so easy and pretty in a hot and dry garden.
But this white  is exceptionally elegant.

Elegant creamy-white pleated cups above blue-grey

Showy, creamy white cups are borne in abundance above finely divided blue-green foliage.
While each petal is pleated, and seems to be cut from the finest silk.
Making the whole plant a very elegant outfit.

Long blooming with no help

Eschscholzia californica ‘Alba’ blooms for months.
With continuous displays through spring, summer and autumn, without any help or effort from us.

Eschscholzia californica ‘Alba’ is some-times classified as an annual in very cold regions. But needless to say it self seeds quite readily and reliably from one year to the next. And again with no help from us.

So plant Californian Poppies in Full Sun, in well drained soil, and leave them to get on with the job.
California Poppies are not fussy about the type of soil, and absolutely relish anywhere sandy, rocky or with gravel.
Plus the hotter, windier, and more exposed the better.
So they are ideal for seaside and arid areas, and are very water-wise plants for gardeners with limited water supply.

45cm. High in bloom x 45cm Wide low mound of fine lacy foliage.

SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY – Suits children & beginners

Eschscholzia californica ‘Alba’seeds can be scattered directly in the garden during early spring/ or sown indoors at any time.

INDOORS: Sow seeds in a punnet, in good quality seed raising mix, at any time.
Now lightly cover the seeds with fine river sand or sieved mix, just to a depth equivalent to the size of the seed.

First thoroughly moisten the sown punnet by standing it in a shallow water bath.
And allowing the moisture to percolate up to the surface of the mix from below.

Now drain, and place the moist punnet in a warm, well lit place (not in direct sunlight).
Cover with a plastic lid or bag to retain moisture.

Temperatures of approx. 15-20 degrees C. are ideal for rapid and optimum germination.

Continue to keep moist by misting from a spray water-bottle.

Seeds germinate in 10 to 30 days approx. and are very easy and quick.

Pot on seedlings to harden off and mature before finally planting out in the garden.
