Eschscholzia californica ‘Alba’ is one of the loveliest of all the Californian Poppies.
All Californian Poppies are so easy and pretty in a hot and dry garden, but this white poppy is exceptionally elegant.

Elegant creamy-white pleated cups above blue-grey

Showy, creamy white cups are borne in abundance above finely divided blue-green foliage.
While each petal is pleated, and seems to be cut from the finest silk.
Making the whole plant a very elegant outfit.

Long blooming with no help

Eschscholzia californica ‘Alba’ blooms for months.
With continuous displays through spring, summer and autumn, without any help or effort from us.

Reliable self sower from year to year

Eschscholzia californica ‘Alba’ is sometimes classified as an annual in very cold regions. But needless to say it self seeds quite readily and reliably from one year to the next. And again with no help from us.

“Plant & forget”

So plant Californian Poppies in Full Sun, in well drained soil, and just leave them to get on with the job.

Revel in heat, dry & wind

California Poppies are not fussy about the type of soil, and absolutely relish anywhere sandy, rocky or with gravel.
Plus the hotter, windier, and more exposed the better they like it.
So they are ideal for seaside and arid areas, and are very water-wise plants for gardeners with limited water supply.

45cm. High in bloom x 45cm Wide low mound of fine lacy foliage.

Suits beginners & gardening with kids

Eschscholzia californica ‘Alba’ seeds can be scattered directly in the garden during early spring/ or sown indoors at any time.

Sow indoors for quick plants & early flowers: Sow the seeds in good quality seed raising mix, at any time.
Sowing Tip for poppies: It is best to sow seeds of Eschscholzia californica ‘Alba’ as very small pinches in individual, deep small pots.
Because these seedlings quickly develop long tap roots and resent being disturbed. So it is best to sow a small clump in a pot, then transplant the whole clump into the garden when ready, without pulling them apart. This avoids root disturbance.

Now lightly cover the seeds with fine river sand or sieved mix, just to a depth equivalent to the size of the seed.

Then thoroughly moisten the sown punnet by standing it in a shallow water bath.
And allowing the moisture to percolate up to the surface of the mix from below.

Now drain, and place the moist punnet in a warm, well lit place (not in any direct sunlight).
And covering with a clear plastic lid or plastic bag helps to retain consistent moisture.

Temperatures of approx. 15-20 degrees C. are ideal for rapid and optimum germination.

Continue to keep moist by misting from a spray water-bottle.

Seeds germinate in 10 to 30 days approx. and are very easy and quick.

Once sprouted, then harden the seedlings off before planting out in the garden by the little pot full, without disturbance.

Seed Count: 300 seeds approx. per pack.
