Eucomis reichenbachii, Purple Pineapple Flower: A rare bulbous perennial from South Africa E. reichenbachii has massive fleshy strap-shaped leaves from which arise stout stems carrying very long lasting, purple-edged, green flowers in late summer and autumn. This hardy delightful plant resembles a pineapple plant with its fleshy leaves and topknot flower. Good cut flower. Enjoys full sun to light shade. Needs good drainage and allowed to dry out in winter. No need to dig but just do not water over winter. 50cm H x 60cm W.
Sow seed at anytime in good quality seed raising mix to a depth of 5mm. Keep the seed tray in a cool, well lit spot outdoors. Protect from birds. Artificial light is not needed and can prevent germination so be very patient as many species will only germinate in spring after chilling or freezing in the moist seed tray in the winter. Grow on individual seedlings in 8cm pots until of sufficient size to be potted on or planted out in the open garden.
