Eupatorium purpureum
SWEET JOE PIE

Eupatorium purpureum is indeed sweet as pie.
Not permitted for WA

Frothy heads with a sweet vanilla scent

Because it bears frothy domed heads of rich rosy-purple flowers, on tall, strong stems, and with a lovely vanilla scent.
So Sweet Joe Pie is indeed an abundant bloomer and well deserves it’s common name.

Abundant bloomer & florist’s flower

The season of blooming is also handy.
Because it blooms for ages in in late summer & autumn, when so many other flowers have already become tired.
And the cut blooms make excellent florist’s flowers in a vase.

Tough hardy & easy in the garden

Eupatorium purpureum is tough & hardy, easy and obliging to grow in the garden.
As well as quick and easy to raise from seed.

Can tolerate clay

So plant Sweet Joe Pie in Part Sun or Dappled Shade.
Where he is not a bit fussy about soil type.
And will even tolerate clay, drier or wetter soils.

Happy in the company of trees & shrubs

Eupatorium purpureum is also a water-wise plant that does not guzzle water.
As long as it is provided with shade for part of the day, and preferably shaded from the harshest afternoon rays.
So it is very happy in the company of trees and shrubs.
And with such tall stature it can really make a statement amongst large companions.

Robustly frost hardy

Eupatorium purpureum is robustly frost hardy, and a long lived perennial clump.
So your clump will plump up to be fatter each year, without ever becoming invasive.
But can instead be relied on to be an ever more prolific bloomer each year.

Beloved by bees & butterflies

Sweetly scented, nectar rich flower heads of Eupatorium purpureum are irresistable magnets to bring our pollinating friends the bees and butterflies into the garden.

Hardy perennial clump. Deciduous.

Flowers atop 1.2m. High tall, upright stems x 75cm Wide foliage clump.
