Francoa sonchifolia ‘Pink Giant’
PINK MAIDEN’S WREATH
Francoa sonchifolia ‘Pink Giant’ is a chance seedling with very large blossoms and attractive bicoloured pink petals.
This recent discovery has now been established into a superb new seed strain.
Larger blooms in lovely shades of pink
‘Pink Giant’ blooms are consistently larger, more attractive and longer lasting than the old original Francoa sonchifolia.
And packed closely into long heads atop long flower stems.
Superb cut flowers of commercial quality
So it makes an absolutely superb cut flower of commercial quality, and is a decided improvement on the old original version already in commercial floristry production for years.
Because the long, strong clean stems, and long vase life of the original Francoa sonchifolia that florists like so much, is now combined with the larger flowers and beautiful pink shades of ‘Pink Giant’.
Tough under trees & shrubs
Francoa sonchifolia ‘Pink Giant’ enjoys Part Shade to Shade and is ideal for planting under large tree canopies. Though the tough leaves can also cope with Full Sun for at least part of the day.
But the plant so handy because it is one that can cohabit with much larger neighbours and make a go of it if needed.
It is a “go-to” groundcover for more challenging places under trees and shrubs, as long as it receives some sun at some time during the day.
Hardy in dry & frost
Francoa sonchifolia ‘Pink Giant’ will endure periods of dry with a minimum of help, once it is well established.
Of course you cannot expect a newly planted, young plant to immediately face harsh treatment. But once Francoa sonchifolia ‘Pink Giant’ is established, then it has admirable powers of endurance.
Pretty groundcover
‘Pink Giant’ is an evergreen perennial, and forms neat rosettes of wavy edged, mid green foliage.
So even when it is not in bloom it forms a permanent and attractive groundcover in the garden.
Evergreen hardy perennial clump (not invasive in any way).
90cm. High in flower spire x 50cm. Wide evergreen clump of attractive foliage.
SEED SOWING ADVICE:
Sow seeds of Francoa sonchifolia ‘Pink Giant’ indoors at any time.
Sow the seeds on the surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Then gently pat seeds to the surface of the mix to ensure good contact.
Now just lightly cover with fine river sand or sieved mix.
Because these seeds need light to germinate.
Thoroughly moisten the sown punnet by standing in a shallow water bath.
And allowing the moisture to percolate up to the surface of the mix from below.
Then drain, and place the moist punnet in a warm, well-lit position (not in direct sunlight).
Cover with a transparent cover to retain moisture.
Temperatures of 15-20 degrees C are ideal for rapid and optimum germination.
Continue to keep moist by misting from a spray water bottle as required.
Seeds germinate in 14 to 30 days.
Then pot on seedlings to harden off and mature before finally planting out in the garden.
SEED COUNT: 40 seeds per pack approx.
(We always aim to exceed the stated seed count, and give a generous serve).
