Gentiana lutea – Strong erect spires hold whorls of large golden, star like flowers in late spring. A long lived hardy perennial with large basal lily like leaves. Used in herbal medicine Gentians require moist, humus rich, well drained soil. Easy to grow but keep soil moist. Sun to part shade. 90cm x 50cm.
Gentiana seeds can be sown at any time in good quality gritty compost or seed raising mix, but are best sown in winter or early spring to benefit from a cold spell in wet compost to break the dormancy. We suggest covering the seeds very thinly with sand or fine grit to about the seeds own depth. If the seed does not germinate within 6-12 weeks, the damp seed tray can be placed in a polythene bag and placed in the fridge for a period of 4 weeks cold treatment .Then place back in un heated poly house with a glass or plastic cover to help keep moisture in, they may still take many months to appear. Be patient and do not discard the seed.
