Gladiolus flanaganii, Suicide Lily: Named because of its preferred habitat on the cliffs faces of the Drakensberg Mountains of South Africa where many attempts to collect seed resulted in death. This alluring, brilliant red, smaller growing Gladiolus has somewhat angled stems as if it were still on the cliff face reaching out into space. The 5 cm blooms are produced over the summer months with up to 7 flowers opening in succession along the flower spikes. Enjoys full sun, in will drained soil. Tolerates long dry periods. Ideal for well draining pots. 28 cm H x 15 cm W.
Sow gladiolus seeds on good quality seed raising mix at any time . Lightly cover with vermiculite or mix to approx. 5 mm deep. Place te seed tray in a well lit cool location out doors. ( Protect seed from birds and Mice) . Artificial heat is not needed and can prevent germination, Many species will only germinate after experiencing winter chilling or freezing in the moist seed tray. Transplant and grow on individual seedlings in 8cm pots until the plant is of sufficient size to be potted on or planted in the garden.
