Helenium autumnale ‘Wyndley’
WYNDLEY AUTUMN CONEFLOWERS
Helenium autumnale ‘Wyndley’ is a golden highlight of our autumn garden.
Not permitted for entry WA
Great show for autumn
Just when all the other flowers are exhausted from the long summer heat – ‘Wyndley’ steals the show in late summer and into autumn.
Dials up flower-power when all the others are flagging
Bearing great heads of tawny-gold, with striking dark central cones, in a spectacular massed display.
“Autumn Coneflower” is a perfect name.
Beloved by gardeners & florists alike
Helenium autumnale ‘Wyndley’ blooms in great domes of close packed flowers.
Borne on long, straight, stout stems.
With blooms that are beautiful in a vase or bouquet, either fresh or dried, or stealing the show in the autumn flower garden.
The broad flower heads shrug off bad weather, heat or downpours – they are very weather proof in the garden and long lasting in a vase.
Excellent cut fresh or dried for florists
Easy to use, long lasting fresh blooms for arrangements, and the dried cones are especially prized by florists.
Flower farmers adore it
Cut flower growers adore Helenium autumnale ‘Wyndley’ – because the stems are so strong and straight, and almost leafless so they are very easy to clean and bunch.
And of course they burst into abundant bloom at the end of summer when other things are giving up the ghost.
Magnet for bees, pollinators & finches
The fiesta of bees, butterflies and valuable pollinating insects that flock to your Helenium blooms is an autumn treat.
And if you also leave some cones to go to seed for winter, then native Finches and other small seed eating birds will also think you are an angel.
As the cones provide food in a lean, cold time of the year (and look rather handsome in the winter garden too).
Quick & Easy to grow
Helenium autumnale ‘Wyndley’ is a hardy, evergreen perennial plant.
Which remains through the winter as a low, evergreen clump of foliage.
Then through the spring and summer the stems lengthen up, ready to erupt in great heads of blooms and cones at the end of summer and into autumn.
It is a permanent, long-lived garden feature once established.
And ‘Wyndley’ is amongst the most compact, and weather-proof growers of all the Heleniums.
Low maintenance evergreen perennial
Helenium are largely untroubled by any pests and diseases.
And low maintenance – as the only pruning is an annual cut back to the socks in winter, after the flowers and heads of comes are finished.
All easy-going Heleniums ask for, is a sunny spot and well drained soil.
They certainly don’t need pampering.
Water-wise, frost hardy & great value
Once established, clumps of Helenium autumnale ‘Wyndley’ can be largely left to get on with it.
They adapt to a wide range of soils and soil pH, and do not need high fertility to perform.
The only conditions they object to are very wet and very dry soils.
They are not water-guzzlers, and can happily get along with minimal to average garden watering over summer.
And they are iron tough in frost, being hardy down to at least -30C.
Rabbit & deer resistant
Even rabbits and deer are not particularly attracted to Autumn Coneflowers, and will usually pass by on their way to something more tasty.
Quick & Easy from seed
Helenium autumnale ‘Wyndley’ quickly develops from seed, so you can have flowers in the autumn after sowing the seed by early spring.
Traditionally used to make snuff & get rid of bad spirits
Many moons ago in North America, when the world was a different place – the leaves of Helenium autumnale were dried, pulverized to a fine powder, and stored in the doctor’s medicine bag.
Then offered to patients to sniff up.
This produced a big sneeze, which was thought to expel evil humours and spirits.
Hence the old name of Sneezeweed for Heleniums.
Height 50cm – 80cm approx. x 20cm – 40cm approx. Wide.
It is an upright growing, long lived perennial plant.
SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY
Suitable for beginners & gardening with kids
Helenium autumnale ‘Wyndley’ seeds can be sown outdoors, directly in the garden, in either early spring or autumn.
OR
Sow indoors in a punnet at any time when suitable temperatures are available.
Sow indoors for quick & early flowers: First sow the seeds onto the surface of good quality seed raising mixture, in a punnet.
Then just lightly cover the seed with a fine sprinkling of sieved mix.
Do not bury these seeds deeply.
Now moisten the punnet thoroughly by standing it in a shallow water-bath and allowing the moisture to percolate to the top of the mix from below.
Then place the moistened, sown punnet in a warm, well lit position (not in any direct sunlight).
Temperatures of 18-23°C are ideal for optimum and rapid germination.
You can use a heat mat if you have one, but it is not essential as these seeds are willing germinators. A warm, well-lit position will do.
And continue to keep the mix moist but not wet, by misting the surface from a spray water bottle.
A clear plastic cover will also help to prevent moisture loss.
Seeds germinate in approx. 7-10 days.
Once germinated, prick out and grow on in a well aired and lit area before planting out in the garden as established plants. This will ensure maximum plant numbers.
Or sow seed directly in the garden in early spring, or during autumn.
Seed Count: 200 seeds per pack approx.
(We always aim to exceed the stated seed count and give a generous serve).
