Hesperis matronalis enthusiastically deserves the common name of Dame’s Violet.
Because the fragrance is outstanding, and equal to the lovely perfume of violets.

Superb sweet scent, particularly at night

Packed clusters of beautifully perfumed, simple single, purple flowers.
Atop 90cm. upright stems.

Excellent cut flowers

Straight flower stems soar from a low rosette of leaves in spring – early summer.
So you can cut stems for a vase indoors where they fragrance the house, particularly at night.
Plus the blooms last well in the vase.

Easy to grow & easy from seed

Hesperis matronalis is one of the easiest, most prolific blooming, and wonderfully fragrant of all biennials to grow in a shaded or woodland garden.
It enjoys growing amongst shrubs and under trees.
Where it is well able to look after itself.

Water-wise & low care

Hesperis matronalis is water-wise and dry resistant, frost hardy, and un-fussy about soil types and conditions.
And it is very reliably self sowing each year, as long as you leave a few flower heads to go to seed.

SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY
Suitable for beginners & kids

Seed is very easy to germinate and can be scattered directly in the garden in late winter and spring / or can be sown indoors at any time.

INDOORS:  First sow the seed in a punnet on good quality seed raising mix. J
Now just lightly cover seed with no more than 2mm of sieved mix / vermiculite / grit.
Because light is needed for seed germination.

Then thoroughly moisten the punnet by standing it in a shallow water bath and allowing the moisture to percolate up to the surface from below.

Now place the moist, sown punnet in a well-lit position.

Because temperatures of 15-20 degrees C. are best for rapid and optimum germination.
And continue to keep moist by misting from a spray water bottle.

Seeds germinate in approx. 20-25 days.

OUTDOORS: Scatter the seed directly in the garden where you want them to grow.
Sowing during late winter and spring is most effective.
