Iris hookerii, Beach Head Iris: One of North America’s most beautiful native Iris, native to limited areas in coastal Maine and north into Canada. This small growing iris has soft lavender blue flowers heavily veined deeper blue during late spring summer. These are held above healthy green ornamental fans of foliage. Ideal for coastal gardens and tolerant of salt spray. Can be planted in border or pots in full sun or part shade but prefers shade in warmer regions. Tolerant of most soil types including clay. 25 cm H x 15 cm W.
Sow Iris seed immediately onto good quality compost or seed raising mix. Cover the seed with mix or vermiculite to approximately their own depth. Natural germination will occur if kept in an unheated poly house or covered seed raising tray. Many seeds wait for Spring before emerging regardless of when they are sown so please give them a full season of growth before discarding. Germination can be quicker if kept at 15-20 Degrees C. Keep moist, but not saturated at all times. Plant out into the garden once large enough to handle and all danger of frost has past.
