SEED SOWING ADVICE:

Sow Iris kaempferi seeds in a punnet indoors at any time when suitable temperatures are available (16 to 21°C).
OR
Scatter directly in the garden during autumn or winter – to allow the cold of winter to give the necessary chilling.

Sow indoors for optimum germination & early plants: First rub the seeds between your hands with some sharp sand or fine sandpaper.
This scores the hard seed case and to allow water to penetrate to the seed kernal and initiate germination.

Then soak seeds in warm water that is hot but not burning to the touch (not boiling).

Leave the seeds to soak for 24 hours.
Seeds that sink to the bottom have absorbed water and are ready to sow.
But seeds that are floating have not yet absorbed moisture.
So re-soak in fresh warm water for a further 24 hours (they may also need a little more abrasion to break the hard seed coat).

Now sow the seed in a punnet on surface of good quality seed raising mix.
And cover with grit/mix/sand/vermiculite to depth of seed diameter.

Keep the sown punnet moist at 16 to 21°C for 2-4 weeks.

Give a pretend winter

Then wrap the moist, sown punnet in cling wrap & place in fridge (not freezer) for 4-6 weeks.

Now remove. unwrap punnet & place again in a well lit position at 12-21°C.

Seedlings emerge within approx. 30 days.
But do not discard punnet, as some seedlings may come later.
This is a natural trick of the plant to ensure seedlings have a sporting chance.

Iris kaempferi are stunners and worth all this palaver.
