Kniphofia caulescens, Caulescent Red Hot Poker: Found in the marshes on high altitude slopes of South Africa this impressive, clump-forming, rhizomatous, evergreen perennial, is upright and has stout stems bearing tufts of broad leaves that are distinctly silver-blue (glaucous) . These attributes make Kniphofia caulescens easy to identify. Stout, very fat spikes of summer flowers open deep coral– red and soon change to light lemon yellow torches. Makes an excellent cut flower. Enjoys full sun to light shade and prefers neutral to acid soil. Dry and frost hardy. 1.5 m H x 1 m. W.
Kniphofia seed can be sown at any time. Sow seed into good quality compost or seed raising mix. Cover with river sand or compost to seeds own depth. Seed tray must be kept moist at all times. Keep at a gentle heat of 15-20 degrees C. Germination may take 14 to 45 days. They resemble small blades of grass. Prick out each seedling as they become large enough to handle. Plant seedlings outside after frosts have finished once they have hardened off and large enough. Young plants are frost tender.
