Lapageria rosea – Long, wax – like pendulous bell flowers of up to 7 cm in length decorate the twining stems with their fantastic coral lipstick pink color. The long lasting flowers are produce from late spring to autumn. The glossy heart shaped leaves are thick and sturdy. This vigorous climber will reach up to 6 m if happy. Best planted in a frost free area in semi shade or can be planted indoors in a well lit area. Enjoys a moist , well drained, slightly acidic soil. 6 m x 1 m.
Seed can be sown at any time into good quality compost or seed raising mix. Cover them thinly with river sand or compost. Place seed tray in good light at between 10 – 20 degrees C. Prick out each seedling as they become large enough to handle into 75 mm pots and grow on before planting into a large container or sheltered spot outdoors. Be sure to protect the pot from freezing in winter. These seed can be very slow indeed to germinate so please be very patient.
