PERSIAN EVERLASTING PEA

Lathyrus rotundifolius is a sensation of pea blooms of a very unusual rich salmon red colour.

And unlike many other climbing peas which are spring blooming. Instead the sumptuous Persian Everlasting Pea is thick with cream buds and salmon flowers in summer and continues on into autumn. The colour transitions are lovely as the earlier flowers mature with rich purple-red sheen while new salmon blooms come out of cream buds.

Hardy low climber

Lathyrus rotundifolius is just the right size climber for any garden, even in a small space.
Plant this hardy climber in Full Sun, on a trellis, fence, or climbing through a supporting shrub. And it will scramble up to about 1m. high all by itself.

Extended season of blooming

By using a spring flowering shrub as the support, you have the pleasure of the exotic Persian Everlasting Pea taking over the job of providing colour in summer and autumn, after the host shrub has finished blooming in spring.
It is self-clinging, with gently twining tendrils, and does not smother the host.

Lovely cut flowers

Flowers are borne thickly in long trusses. So when it hits it’s straps in summer it is literally covered with bloom.
So cut flower stems are also lovely in a vase where they last extremely well and give wonderful striking colour.
Sadly this is one Perpetual Climbing Pea that has no scent. But all is forgiven when you see the rich colour.

Attractive foliage

The “rotundifolius” part of the botanical name tells the tale, as it is clothed in very pretty, small, rounded green leaves.
Then in late autumn the foliage colours to gold, and the deciduous climber retreats underground for the winter. Ready to emerge again next spring when it grows rapidly to it’s full height.

Quickly raised from seed & easily grown

Plant hardy Lathyrus rotundifolius in well drained soil, with plenty of feed and some gravel for good drainage, and it will deliver perfect results.
It is easily raised from seed and grown on to flowering size.
Once planted it is a permanent perennial fixture in the garden, and does not need re-sowing each year.

Frost hardy & dry resistant

Lathyrus rotundifolius is hardy in even severe frosts, withstanding temperatures down to -10C approx.
It is also a water-wise perennial once established, and able to cope with periods of heat or dry.

Deciduous perennial climber 1m. High x 30cm. Wide. Self twining.

SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY
Suitable for beginners & gardening with kids

Can be sown outdoors direct in the garden in autumn, winter or early spring / or sown indoors in a punnet at any time.

INDOORS & OUTDOORS: First soak the pea seeds in warm (not boiling) water and allow to cool overnight.
So Pea seeds that are ready to sow will have sunk to the bottom by morning. While any that are not yet ready will be floating.
Should you have any floating seeds – then roughen the hard coat by gently rubbing the seeds between 2 sheets of fine sandpaper, or rubbing between your hands with some grit or sand. Then re-soak overnight again.

Then plant pea seeds 2.5cm. deep.

Temperatures of 18-20C. are best for rapid and optimum germination.

Seeds germinate in approx. 14 days. at optimum temperature.

SEED COUNT:  3 seeds per pack approx. (Seeds of this unusual and lovely perennial are scarce).
