Lavandula stoechas ‘Castilliano Violet’ is newly bred, intensely fragrant, and amongst the loveliest colouring of all the “Donkey Ears” Lavenders.

Superior size & scent

So the flowers on ‘Castilliano Violet’ have beautiful, rich colouring.
With very dark purple plump bases, and conspicuous crowns of vivid violet “Donkey Ears” that flutter in the breeze.
The blooms are also larger than normal Lavender blooms, and pack a punch of perfume that is as big as their ears.
With the dark violet flowers also contrasting so very well against greyish foliage.

Perfumed flowers excellent for cutting & drying

Flowers and foliage of Lavandula stoechas ‘Castilliano Violet’ are excellent cut and dried for using in pot-pourri, lavender sachets or arrangements.
Because they last well and hold their rich colour and intense perfume for a very long time.
So a bunch cut, then hung upside down to dry, will go on to perfume your cupboards and drawers for months. And help repel moths and insects.

Bred specially for modern gardens

Lavandula stoechas ‘Castilliano Violet’ has been bred with all the conveniences for modern gardening in mind.
So it is a naturally upright, compact and neat rounded grower (40-60cm High x 40-60cm. Wide approx.)
Making it an ideal plant for low hedges, either clipped or unclipped as it is such a neat grower; and sensational when featured in a pot or as a single colourful specimen.

Long blooming colour & perfume

Modern gardeners also like to get good value for space given.
And ‘Castilliano Violet’ really performs with intensely perfumed blooms from mid-spring right through summer. With some repeats in autumn, especially if you give it a haircut in late summer.
Our bees of course adore it too.

Heat & Drought hardy

Lavandula stoechas ‘Castilliano Violet’ relishes a position in Full Sun, where it can really ripen its flowers and give off it’s scent.
It will tolerate acid soil, but really thrives in alkaline soils.
So make sure you treat it with a handful of lime twice a year.

More tolerant of humidity than most Lavenders

Lavandula stoechas is more tolerant of humidity than almost all other types of Lavender.
However it will still hate you if you plant it in a heavy or waterlogged spot, and love you if you give it sandy,  gravel, or any well drained soil.
But give it very limited fertilizer, especially in good soil, as it looks and smells even better on lean rations.
‘Castilliano Violet’ is naturally adapted to seaside conditions and likes nothing better than a rocky slope.

Water-wise choice

Lavandula stoechas ‘Castilliano Violet’ is a very water-wise choice for gardeners with limited water.
And it is drought resistant, and toughly hardy in summer heat.

Small, neat evergreen shrub

Lavandula stoechas ‘Castilliano Violet’ is an evergreen low, neat shrub.
40-60cm. High in violet eared, scented blooms x 40-60cm. Wide aromatic grey-green foliage.
It is a very low maintenance shrub.
With just a trim over after the long spring-summer flowering has finished being enough to keep it very neat for the year, and stimulate it to repeat with autumn flowers.

Quick from seed to flower

Lavandula stoechas ‘Castilliano Violet’ has been recently bred especially for growing from seed for commercial uses.
It germinates very quickly, and grows to flowering maturity very quickly.
So an autumn sowing of seed will produce flowering shrubs the following spring and summer.

SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY

Suits beginners & gardening with kids

Sow seed of Lavandula stoechas ‘Castilliano Violet’ in winter to late spring or sow in late summer to winter.

Sow indoors for quick & early plants: First sow the seeds in a punnet on the surface of a well-drained, seed raising mix.

Then press gently to ensure good contact with the mix.
And barely cover with sieved mix as the seeds need light to germinate.

Then thoroughly moisten the punnet by standing it in a shallow water bath and allowing the moisture to percolate up to the surface of the mix from below.

Continue to keep the punnet moist in a warm, well-lit place (not in any direct sunlight).
Temperatures of 18-20°C approx. are best for fast and optimum germination.

Seedlings emerge in 3-14 days.

If the seeds are shy to break their natural dormancy – then cling-wrap punnet and place in the fridge (not freezer) for 3 weeks.
Then remove from fridge, unwrap punnet & return to warm, well-lit place. Keep moist.

Seed Count: 15 seeds per pack approx.
