Lilium martagon
PINK TURK’S CAP LILY

Lilium martagon erupts into bloom in summer.

Flock of pink-purple “Turk’s Caps” blooms

The show is impressive, with a flock of pink-purple “Turk’s Cap” shaped blooms, on impressive large, branching stems.

Impressive large branching flower stems

The stacked spires of flowers are a superb garden feature with their upturned petals like squadrons of pagoda roofs.

Unmissable sweet scent

And their sweet scent is also unmissable.

Scores of twirled blooms late spring-early summer

An established plant can bear scores of delightfully twirled flowers each late spring-early summer.
With up to 50 blooms per stem on an established clump. Wow!!!

Striking cut flowers

So elegant stems are cut for floristry and impress all in a vase.
As Liliums they have an excellent vase life, and are easy to work into striking arrangements.

Long lived beauty

The gorgeous Pink Turk’s Cap Lily is a bulbous perennial that returns happily each year bigger and better than ever, without any help from you except giving it the preferred deciduous woodland conditions.

Low maintenance

You do not have to lift or divide them – instead just leave them alone to get on with it.

Perfect under deciduous trees & shrubs

Lilium martagon is hardy and easy to grow when it is given it’s preferred position.
It loves to grow in Part Shade, or where it gets Morning Sun.
It naturally grows under deciduous trees, so it enjoys humus rich, well-drained soil, and does enjoy leaf litter or light mulch.

Very frost hardy

Turk’s Cap Lilies are extremely frost hardy, because they are adapted to withstand temperatures down to -30°C.
Their native habitat stretches from the summer heat of Portugal to the winter freezing of Canada.

Easy care over summer

And as they are dormant over summer they do not require a lot of additional watering – they have gone to sleep before the hot weather arrives.
So Lilium martagon is a low maintenance treasure for gardens with deciduous trees or shrubs.

Elegant slender height for shade

Impressive 1.2m High when in flower on slender upright, branched stems.

SEED SOWING ADVICE:

Sow seeds of Lilium martagon in a punnet indoors, at any time suitable temperatures can be given (18-20°C).

Sow indoors: Sow the seeds on their sides, (not flat like pancakes) in a punnet on the surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Then barely cover the seeds with grit/sieved mix/fine vermiculite.

Now thoroughly moisten the punnet by standing it in a shallow water bath, and allowing the moisture to percolate up to the surface of the mix from below.

Then place the sown, moist punnet in a warm, well-lit position (not in any direct sunlight). Temperatures of  18-20°C are optimum at this stage.

Continue to keep consistently moist by misting from a spray water-bottle.
Covering the punnet with a clear plastic cover, or a plastic bag can help to maintain consistent moisture.
And continue this treatment for 4 weeks.

Then wrap the moist sown punnet in cling wrap / plastic bag and place it in the fridge (not freezer) for 6-9 weeks.

After the period of chilling in the fridge, remove from fridge, unwrap the punnet, and place it again in well lit-position at 18-20°C.

Seedlings emerge within approx. 30 days.
But patience – do not discard punnet, as some seedlings may come later. This is a natural strategy of the plant to increase the chances of the babies.

Seed Count: 15 seeds per pack approx.
(We always aim to exceed the stated seed count, and give a generous serve).
