Majestic spires of rich sky blue make Lobelia siphilitica a prince amongst Lobelias.
No wonder it is also called the “Great Blue Lobelia”, because that just about says it all.
Large, rich blue blooms, stacked up on tall, upright stems in summer & autumn, do indeed make it great.

Lobelia siphilitica does best in Part Shade or Dappled Shade to Morning Sun, in normal garden soil, with average normal garden watering.
But it also suits wet, clay or boggy soils, and is truly spectacular planted at the side of a dam.
And then it can tolerate much more sun, if it has wet feet.

It is also frost hardy and low maintenance.
So the only work to be found is to shear back the spent flower stems at the end of each flush of flowers.
And you cut them right back to the socks when the season is finished. Then this encourages the low carpet of foliage to thicken up ready for next blooming.

SEED SOWING ADVICE:

Sow in punnets indoors at any time. But spring or autumn is best.

Seed is powder fine, so care when opening.

INDOORS: Sow seeds in punnets on surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Press the surface gently to make sure the fine seeds are in good contact with the mix, but do not cover the seeds with mix.
Seeds need light to germinate.

Place sown punnet in a warm, well lit place (not in direct sunlight), or place on a heat mat covered with clear plastic lid.

Keep moist.

Temperatures of 18-20°C are optimum for rapid germination.

Seedlings emerge in approx. 14-20 days.
