Melianthus major, Giant Honey Flower: A beautiful, structural large foliage plant native to South Africa. Reaching up to 3m high and wide the pinnate blue green leaves make a an amazing statement with an almost jungle like look. Dark red, nectar laden flower spikes up to 80cm tall appear in spring. These are followed by green pods. Often cut down by frost, we mulch the crown heavily, and our plants faithfully re shoot from the base each spring. Enjoys full sun to light shade in a sheltered part of the garden. 3m x3m.
Sow Melianthus seeds in spring in good quality compost or seed raising mix and just cover the seeds with a sprinkling of river sand or compost. Place in a propagator or warm place and keep at a temperature around 15-18 degrees C. Do not exclude from light as this helps germination. Keep moist but not waterlogged. Germination usually takes 21 to 30 days. When large enough to handle prick out into a 75mm pot and grow on until large enough to transplant into the garden after all frosts have finished.
