Nepeta govaniana

Nepeta govaniana is a Catmint out of the box.
It is so different to all other Catmints, with large heads of soft, fine, dainty lemon-yellow flowers, borne as a cloud rather than in dense heads.
Plus the blooms are softly scented.
And it grows as a tall, upright rounded perennial rather than a groundcover like most other Catmints.

A cloud of fine lemon-yellow flowers

So it makes a fine background plant in a flower bed, or an interplanting between roses and other shrubs.
And it looks wonderful with yellow, cream, white or lavender roses and shrubs.

Insect repelling companion plant

Nepeta govaniana has pleasantly aromatic foliage and this makes it a very useful companion plant in the flower garden, veggie plot or orchard.
Because the essential oils in the foliage help in deterring sap sucking insects such as aphids.
And best of all it is unpalatable to rabbits and deer as they really cant abide the taste.

Shade loving Catmint

Unusually amongst the Catmint family, Nepeta govaniana actually prefers Part Shade to Shade rather than baking in the sun.
Though it is water-wise like it’s other Catmint cousins, and a good choice for gardeners with limited water, provided it is given the shade it enjoys.
Plus it is frost and dry hardy, and can cope with humidity.

Nepeta govaniana forms an upright graceful perennial. 90cm High cloud of flowers x 60cm Wide foliage.

Sow indoors in punnets at any time / or scatter seed directly in the garden in spring.

Sow seed on the surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Then gently press the seeds into the surface of the mix to ensure good contact.
Now cover the seed with sieved mix to a depth of the diameter of the seed.

Thoroughly moisten the sown punnet by soaking in a shallow water bath so the moisture percolates through the mix to the surface from below.

Then place the punnet in warm position or on a heat bed if you have one. However a heat bed is not essential as these seeds are easy and quick to germinate.

Continue to keep the punnet moist by misting from a spray water bottle.

Temperatures of 16 to 22°C are best for rapid and optimum germination.

Seeds germinate in 7 to 14 days approx.

SEED COUNT: 20 seeds per pack approx.
(We always aim to exceed the stated seed count, and give a generous serve).
