Paeonia tenuifolia
FERN LEAF PEONY
SALE: Buy 1 get 2 packs

Paeonia tenuifolia has gorgeous dark crimson bowls of peony blooms in late spring – early summer.

Deep crimson bowls with a satin sheen

These beautiful bowls of blooms gleam with a satin sheen.
So the texture of the petals is exceptional.
As is the colour – deep lustrous crimson.

Floating above the finest ferny, filigreed foliage

While the foliage of Paeonia tenuifolia sets off the flowers superbly too.
Because the leaves are deeply cut into the finest, ferny, filigreed foliage.
Looking like green lace doilies sitting beneath each flower bowl.

Blooms before most other Peonies

It is good to spread the Peony pleasure – and Paeonia tenuifolia blooms very early – before almost all others.

Foliage texture is a summer highlight

Then after the blooms have finished – the lovely fine foliage creates beautiful garden texture and interest (60cm. approx. high mound)

Vivid autumn foliage colours

The foliage then turns to vivid gold lace in autumn.

Fine spring foliage feature

While the newly emerging leaves are a special treat during spring, with dainty lace textures and flushes of wine amongst the fresh green.

Makes an eye catching feature for spring, summer & autumn

So Paeonia tenuifolia is not just a “one-hit-wonder”, but instead it is a garden treat all spring, summer and autumn. With foliage texture and colour, dramatic bowls of blooms, and autumn with vivid foliage colour and texture.

I would grow it for the beautiful foliage alone
& the blooms as a huge bonus
Not a fussy peony to grow

Paeonia tenuifolia is not nearly as fussy to grow as many other Peony Roses.
So you can plant it in Sun to Part Shade.

More heat hardy than most Peonies

The Fern Leaf Peony is an easy grower, and low maintenance.

Frost hardy

And is very soundly frost hardy.

Long lived perennial clump

Paeonia tenuifolia is a long-lived perennial, deciduous peony.
60cm High x 45cm Wide.

SEED SOWING ADVICE:

Sow indoors in spring or autumn.

First rub the seeds around in a little dry sand, or between 2 sheets of fine sandpaper,  to roughen the hard seed coats.
Then soak the seeds overnight in a glass of clean water.

Now sow the seeds in deeper individual pots rather than in a punnet. Because they develop strong roots quickly.
Sow the soaked seeds on the surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Then cover seeds with 10mm of sieved mix/grit/or fine vermiculite.

Thoroughly moisten the pots by standing in a shallow water bath, and allowing the moisture to percolate up to the surface of the mix from below.

Proceed to keep the mix consistently moist, in well-lit but cool position (not in direct sunlight) for 6 weeks.
Mist regularly from a spray water bottle to maintain moisture.
Covering the pots with a clear plastic lid or plastic bag between mistings – will also help to maintain necessary consistent moisture.

Then wrap the moist pots in cling wrap & place in fridge (not freezer) for 6 weeks.

Remove from the fridge, unwrap & return to a cool, well-lit position.
Continue to keep consistently moist.

Seeds germinate in 14-28 days approx. But patience – do not discard – some seeds may come later. Staggered germination is normal for this plant as it tries to give its seeds a sporting chance of sprouting into favourable weather conditions.

Seed Count: 3 very large seeds per pack (Sorry – seed is always scarce).
