Peucedanum ostruthium has giant lacy heads of sweetly scented, cream & green flowers.
Which are held proudly above decorative umbrellas of foliage, also fragrant.

Queen Ann’s Lace on steroids

Hence the common name of Fragrant Masterwort.
Peucedanum ostruthium certainly is fragrant and large enough to be masterly.
So it has all the dainty charm of Queen Ann’s Lace, but on steroids.

Impressive in garden & vase

Both flower heads and foliage make excellent cut flowers for floristry.
And can be truly impressive in both the garden and in large floral arrangements.

Tough, easy grower, low maintenance.

Peucedanum ostruthium is a hardy perennial.
So it is a tough, easy grower, and a low maintenance plant.
It can be successfully planted in Sun or Shade.
And happily it can tolerate Dry Shade if necessary, though it prefers a Part Shade to Full Sun position.
Once established it is also drought tolerant & water-wise.
And can gently self-sow in the garden, but not excessively.

Peucedanum ostruthium grows 1m. High in foamy heads x 80cm Wide.

SEED SOWING ADVICE: EASY

Sow Peucedanum ostruthium seeds indoors in spring or autumn / or scatter directly in the garden in spring or autumn.

Indoors for fast plants: First sow the seeds in a punnet on surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Then gently press the seeds onto the surface of the mix, to ensure good contact.

Now barely cover seed, because light is needed for germination.
And you can use sieved mix, or fine grit, or vermiculite, or washed sand to sprinkle over the seeds.

Then place the sown punnet into a water bath (make sure the water level in the bath is below the surface of the mix).
So the moisture percolates up through the mix from the bottom, to thoroughly moisten the mix throughout.
Soak for a short time until moisture appears on the surface of the mix, and then remove and drain.
Because the mix needs to be moist throughout, but not wet.

Seeds like warmth

Then place the moist punnet in a warm, well-lit position (not in direct sun) for 2-4 weeks.
Temperatures of 20-25°C approx. are best for rapid and optimum germination.
You can use a temperature-controlled heat mat if you have one for rapid germination, but it is not essential. A window-sill or well-lit corner is also fine.

Adding a clear plastic cover helps to retain moisture in the punnet.

And continue to keep the punnet moist by spraying the surface of the mix a fine spray water bottle, or re-soaking in the water bath, as required.
(If the punnet is light weight when you pick it up – the mix is drying out and needs another soak from below in the water bath).

Give a pretend winter

After 2-4 weeks in the warm, well lit position, then wrap moist punnet in cling wrap (or a plastic bag) & place in fridge (not freezer) for 4- 6 weeks.

After 4-6 weeks in the fridge, remove from the fridge, unwrap & return to the well-lit position at 12-15°C. Keep moist.

Seedlings emerge in 14-28 days.
