Polemonium caeruleum f. album ‘White Pearl’ bears clusters of lovely, pearly white cups over spring into summer.
Pearly white cups repeating spring into summer
So they light up shaded gardens with their lovely silken white flowers for a long blooming period.
The hardy clump continues to produce a series of spire stems, topped by the clusters of white cups.
Ladders of pretty foliage
However lovely “Jacob’s Ladder” also contributes garden interest and texture with its foliage.
It produces a neat, mounded, evergreen clump of ladder-like foliage (the leaves are stacked up the stems).
Ladders to heaven
And then during the blooming season it spires up with flower stems – looking like ladders with the clustered white cups atop.
Hence it gains some wonderful common names and associated legends.
So the biblical story goes……the ladders of leaves remind us of Jacob’s dreams and the angels climbing ladders to heaven.
So the plant is commonly called “Jacob’s Ladder” or “Ladder to Heaven”.
Thrives in shade or partly shaded gardens
Polemonium caeruleum f. album ‘White Pearl’ is a very hardy and willing plant.
So it can thrive in a wide range of conditions.
But if given a choice – it prefers Part Shade, Woodland conditions, or Morning Sun.
Though it does not enjoy hot afternoon sun or high summer humidity.
Happy in a wide range of soils
It is such an obliging clumping perennial that it is happy in a wide range of soils, including clay and sandy soils.
And tolerates a wide range of soil pH – from acid to alkaline lime soils.
Very frost hardy
Tough little Polemonium caeruleum f. album ‘White Pearl’ is frost hardy down to at least -25°C.
That is one super-bumper frost.
Easily grown – hardy & healthy
Jacob’s Ladder is a hardy and healthy clumping plant.
It is very rarely troubled by any pests and diseases, especially if planted with some afternoon shade.
Bees & pollinators love the pearly blooms
Both native and honey bees (and other insect pollinators) love foraging amongst the golden stamens, laden with pollen.
Rabbit & deer resistant
While the pesky rabbits and deer are usually not interested.
Easy low care & low maintenance
So there is little to do year round – Polemonium caeruleum f. album ‘White Pearl’ just looks after itself.
It thrives on normal garden watering over summer, and shrugs off winter cold.
Plus it is a very neat clump of evergreen ladder foliage – so no work to do there.
If you are desperate for something to do – you can trim off spent flower stems to encourage more – but ‘White Pearl’ will do it anyway.

SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY
Suits beginners & gardening with kids
Seeds of Polemonium caeruleum f. album ‘White Pearl’ can be scattered in the garden in early spring.
OR
Sow indoors whenever suitable temperatures can be provided (15-20°C). You can use a heat mat if you have one.
Sow indoors for optimum germination, quick & early plants: First sow the seeds in a punnet on surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Now gently pat the surface to ensure seeds have good contact with the mix.
But only barely cover with a fine sprinkling of sieved mix or fine vermiculite.
Because light aids germination.
Now thoroughly moisten the punnet by standing it in a shallow water bath and allowing the moisture to percolate up to the surface of the mix from below.
Then place in a warm, well lit position (not in any direct sun).
Temperatures of 15-20°C are ideal for optimum germination.
Continue to keep moist by misting from a spray water-bottle.
Covering the punnet with a clear plastic lid or a plastic bag will also helo to maintain necessary consistent moisture.
Seedlings emerge in approx. 14 days.
Prick out as soon as the seedlings have their first set of true leaves and grow on in pots until ready to plant out in the garden.
