Potentilla thurberi Monarch’s Velvet – Monarchs Velvet Cinquefoil: Surely the most attractive of all the garden Potentilla. It is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial that is native to coniferous forests, stream banks and moist meadows in Arizona, New Mexico and northern Mexico. Massed heads of velvety, deep raspberry red, shade to crimson – black in the centre and flower over a very long period, it is upright in growth rather than ground cover like. The bright crinkled, green, strawberry like foliage makes a perfect foil for the regal flowers. Repeat flowers if cut back regularly. Excellent for planting under roses and shrubbery. Very easy , pest and disease resistant. Enjoys full sun to part shade, in neutral to slightly acid soil that is humus rich well drained. 70cm x 50cm.
Sow Potentilla thurberi Monarch’s Velvet seeds in good quality compost or seed raising mix at any time . Lightly cover with fine river sand or compost to their own depth. Place in a propagator or cover with a plastic lid in a warm place. We recommend germinating at 15-20 degrees C keep moist at all times, but do not saturate. Germination in 14 to 30 days. Pot on seedlings to harden off and mature before finally planting out in the garden.
