For me, Primula japonica Alba ‘Postford White’ is an angel amongst all the beautiful Candelabra Primula. A long-time friend.

Towers of pure white

‘Postford White’ bears towers of pure white flowers.
But with each flower highlighted by a tiny daffodil yellow eye, making the spires seem to twinkle.

Stacked tiers of glistening white

Because the blooms come in multiple stacked tiers on such lovely, tall flower stems, it is commonly called a Candelabra Primula.

Vigorous & easy Primula, as long as you have a moist spot

Primula japonica Alba ‘Postford White’ is an extremely vigorous, hardy and easy to grow Primula, providing you give it the conditions it enjoys. Which is moist.
So a stand of ‘Postford White’ winding along beside a pond, dam or stream is a sight to behold worthy of the finest Japanese garden.

Abundant repeated spires of blooms

With abundant and repeating blooms in late spring and early summer it is a stunner in any style of garden with a damp spot.
Because Primula ‘Postford White’ just loves having it’s toes damp, or even in water.
Then it will self seed abundantly in it’s happy place, to warm your heart.

Rabbits and deer are not keen

We are fascinated by these spectacular flower beauties. But unbelievably rabbits and deer tend to leave them alone, and place them low on their menu selection.

Attractive foliage rosettes

The foliage rosettes of Primula ‘Postford White’ are actually very attractive, even when not in flower. But not it seems to rabbits and deer.

Pollinators love to sip the nectar

Butterflies and bees do however love sipping from the nectar rich flower funnels.

Light up dark damp areas

So with damp feet, Primula japonica Alba ‘Postford White’ is happy to grow in either Morning Sun, Part Shade or Full Shade positions.
The more water it has the more sun it can take / Or conversely the less water it has the more shade it enjoys.
Where it lights up darker areas brilliantly.
And it simply adores boggy, heavy, water-logged clay soils, and acid to neutral soil conditions.

Frost hardy perennial

Primula japonica Alba ‘Postford White’ is a frost hardy perennial with flower towers rising from an evergreen rosette of decorative crinkled foliage.

60cm. High in magnificent white flower spires of  x 40cm. Wide rosette of evergreen foliage.

SEED SOWING ADVICE:

Primula japonica Alba ‘Postford White’ seeds can be sown at any cool time of the year.

Sowing Indoors: First sprinkle the seed onto a the surface of good quality quality raising mix in a punnet.

(Sowing Tip: Primula seeds are very fine and tiny. So before sowing – pop a little fine sieved mix or sand into the bag containing the seed, shake around to collect the seed, and then sow the whole contents of the bag).

Then barely cover the seed with a fine sieving of mix.
So that the seeds can still be seen through the mix.
Primula japonica seeds need light to germinate.

Now thoroughly moisten the mix by standing the sown punnet in a shallow water bath.
And allowing the moisture to percolate up to the surface of the mix from below.

Temperatures between 10 – 15°C. are ideal for rapid and optimum germination.
But always keep your punnet in a cool, though well-lit place. (Never in any direct sunlight).

Because temperatures exceeding 15°C. may slow and inhibit germination.
While temperatures above 20°C will produce very little if any germination.
Consequently most seeds will go dormant as a protective measure against excessive heat, and will then need a period of 4-6 weeks in the fridge to break their natural dormancy.

Germination at cool temperatures takes between 3-6 weeks.

Seed Count: 75 seeds per pack approx.
