Primula pulverulenta, Candelabra Primula: Native to Sichuan province in China, this is one of the easiest of the tall primulas to keep happy and is long lived in most gardens. Tall flowering stems reach up to 100 cm tall and produce 6-8 tiers or whorls of deep crimson red flowers each up to 2.5 cm across. The flowers are held above the tooth-edged, mid green leaves which form a large rosette up to 80 cm across. P. pulverulenta will grow in any soil that does not dry out and will form large multi stemmed clumps in damp or even wet soils. Prefers shade or woodland position but will prosper in sun if kept moist. 100 cm H x 80 cm W.
Primula seed may be sown at any time onto a quality seed raising mix, barley cover seed so that 50% is still visible. Best germination temperature is between 10-15 degrees C. Temperature exceeding 15 degrees may prevent germination , and above 20 degrees C expect very little germination as most seeds go dormant as a protective measure. Germination takes between 3-6 weeks. Keep seedlings in a cool well lit location to grow on before planting out.
