Salvia nemorosa ‘Blaukonigin’
BLUE QUEEN SAGE
Salvia nemorosa ‘Blaukonigin’ is one of the most beautiful and garden worthy amongst all the very large Salvia family.
Vivid deep rich violet-blue
Salvia nemorosa ‘Blaukonigin’ richly deserves the name of “Blue Queen”.
As it bears graceful, plentiful spires of deep, rich violet-blue, which glow in the garden and draw all eyes.
Long blooming with graceful & plentiful violet-blue spires
And the clump can be kept in almost constant bloom through the warm months by trimming off spent spires, or harvesting for cut flowers, which encourages even faster re-blooming.
The foliage forms a neat, low mound, while the flowers stand proud above on elegant, long stems.
So the effect of the plant in bloom is very airy, open and transparent, whilst also being showy and intense in colour.
Good cut flowers
The long stemmed flower spikes also make good cut flowers.
Easily grown & trouble free
Salvia nemorosa ‘Blaukonigin’ is an easily grown and trouble free perennial clump.
Because it is very forgiving about difficult conditions, including tolerating periods of heat as well as humidity well.
As well as being robustly frost hardy down to approx. -20°C
Forgiving of heat
Salvia nemorosa ‘Blaukonigin’ prefers to be grown in Full Sun, though it can also tolerate some Partial Shade quite well.
It shrugs off heat with its felty foliage.
Salvia nemorosa is also forgiving about soils and will cope a wide range of soil types, from acid to alkaline and lime based soils.
However it grows to perfection in any well drained soil with some extra compost and mulch added.
Water-wise & dry resistant once established
Salvia nemorosa ‘Blaukonigin’ is also resilient during periods of dry, and can exist happily with minimal extra watering once it is established.
Bees & birds adore while rabbits & deer do not
All Salvia nemorosa varieties are rarely if ever troubled by pests and diseases.
Even rabbits and deer do not find Salvia nemorosa palatable – because of the volatile oils in the aromatic foliage.
However native honey-eating birds, bees and friendly pollinator insects adore the ‘Blue Queen’ flowers because they provide such nutritious nectar over a long blooming season.
Low maintenance
Salvia nemorosa ‘Blaukonigin’ forms an evergreen, hardy perennial clump.
45 – 60cm. High in graceful flower spikes x 45cm. Wide neat, low mound of broad foliage.
SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY
Sow in punnets indoors at any time.
Sow indoors for quick & easy plants: First sow the seed in a punnet on the surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Then gently pat the seeds to the mix surface, to ensure good contact.
But do not cover the seeds with mix, because these seeds need light for germination.
Now thoroughly moisten the sown punnet by standing it in a shallow water bath.
And allow the moisture to percolate through to the surface of the mix from below.
Then place the punnet in a warm, well -lit position (but not in any direct sunlight).
Temperatures of 15°-20°C are best for rapid and optimum germination.
So you can use a heat bed if you have one to maintain warmth, but it is not essential. A warm, sheltered window sill will do nicely.
Continue to keep the punnet moist by misting from a spray water bottle.
Covering with a clear plastic lid will also help to maintain consistent moisture.
Seedlings begin to emerge in 14-30 days approx.
Then you can remove the plastic cover to allow air flow.
Grow on until seedlings develop their first set of true leaves, when they are ready to prick out into pots. And grow on in pots until ready to plant in the garden.
Seed Count: 12 seeds per pack approx.
(We always aim to exceed the stated seed count, and give a generous serve).
