Sedum telephium ssp. maximum
CREAMY STONECROP
Sedum telephium ssp. maximum is unusual, in that it has subtle colouring amongst the usually vividly coloured large Sedums.
Making it very useful as a gentle summer and autumn contrast in either garden or pot.
Not permitted for entry to WA
Creamy subtle colours in both foliage & flowers
The large autumn flower heads of Sedum telephium ssp. maximum open in soft, subtle shades of cream, lemon and green; then mature to palest cream with pink tinges as the autumn wears on.
While the foliage is a perfect colour foil of subtle sage greens mixed with sea blue-greens.
So the whole plant gives great value from summer and autumn flower heads plus decorative succulent foliage all year round.
Dry hardy darlings of Australian gardens
Sedum telephium ssp. maximum thrives in hot and dry conditions, so no wonder that Sedums have become the fashionable darlings of Australian gardeners.
Plant in Full Sun or in decorative containers, and prepare for a full year of value from flowers, attractive foliage and architectural shape.
Good cut flowers for vases
Plus the domed flower heads also provide lovely cut flowers at all colour stages, from buds to seed heads.
Food for bees, birds & pollinators
Sedum flowers are rich in nectar and pollen, and intoxicatingly attractive to bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators.
Plus the autumn blooming period provides much needed sustenance for bees and useful insects to endure the summer heat and prepare themselves for winter.
You can also leave the seed heads to dry on the plants over winter.
Thus providing cold weather fodder for native seed eating birds, as well as providing textural winter interest in the garden.
So easy to grow & keep
Sedums are the ultimate “no-water / no work” plants (of course there is no such thing, unless they are plastic plants, but Sedums come very close).
They are low maintenance, and only require a chop back to the toenails at the end of autumn or early spring.
Drought & heat hardy
Sedums are particularly drought & heat hardy once they are established and great water savers. With exceptional abilities to withstand periods of dry and utilize any available water efficiently.
Plus they are robustly frost hardy.
And actually do their best on poorer, less fertile soils, including in sandy conditions.
Though Sedums are not fussy about soil type, it is a must that their position or pot is well drained.
Minimal water required
So they are particularly suitable for sandy, poor or rocky soils, seaside gardens and decorative containers.
45cm. High in creamy autumn flowers x 45cm. Wide clump of decorative coloured foliage.
SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY
Sow seeds of Sedum telephium ssp. maximum at any time of year in a punnet indoors.
Seed sowing tip: The seed of Sedum is powder fine.
So do not attempt to shake it out of the bag or sow it bare.
Instead finely sieve some seed raising, pop a pinch or two of fine mix into the bag with the seed, and shake around.
This will gather up the very fine seed, and it is then easy to sow the entire contents of the bag, and also helping to spread the seed more evenly when sowing.
Sow indoors for quick & early plants: Sow the seeds in punnets on the surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Now gently press the seed to the surface of the mix to ensure good contact.
Then barely dust with fine sieved mix/ sand/grit. Because these seeds need light to germinate.
Thoroughly moisten the punnet by standing it in a shallow water bath and allowing the moisture to percolate up to the surface of the mix from below.
Now place the sown, moist punnet in a warm, well-lit place (not in any direct sun).
Temperatures of 20-25°C approx. are ideal for rapid and optimum germination.
Continue to keep consistently moist by misting from a spray water bottle.
Covering the punnet with a clear plastic lid or bag will also help to prevent drying out and maintain consistent moisture.
Seedlings emerge in approx. 10-30 days.
Seed Count: 150 seeds per pack approx.
(We always aim to exceed the stated seed count, and give a generous serve).
