The bright canary yellow, fragrant flowers resemble birds in flight all over Tropaeolum peregrinum. Creating a talking piece in the garden all through summer and autumn.
And the fragrant, bright flowers attract  birds, bees and butterflies giving great life to the garden. So make sure you plant it outside a window, or near your outdoor seating, so you can enjoy the show as well as the perfume.

This spectacular climber grows vigorously  to 2.5m high, but without strangling it’s host. So it is perfectly safe to allow it to scramble through other trees and shrubs to great decorative effect. And it is a treat on a wire from in a large pot.

Tropaeolum peregrinum is native to South America, so it is a perennial treasure for gardeners in sub-tropical and tropical climates. While those of us in cooler frosty climates treat it as an annual and re-sow each year.

Tropaeolum peregrinum enjoys Full Sun to Part Shade and needs some moisture over the growth period.
Self seeds.

SEED SOWING ADVICE:

Seeds of Tropaeolum peregrinum, Canary Bird Vine, can be sown at any time.

First sow the seed into good quality seed raising mix.
Then cover the seed with river sand or mix to a depth equivalent to the diameter of the seeds.

Now thoroughly moisten the sown punnet by standing it in a water bath until the moisture has percolated through to the top from below.

Then wrap the moist, sown punnet in cling-wrap or a plastic bag, and place in the fridge (not freezer) for 4-6 weeks.

After the period of chilling (a “pretend winter”) remove from the fridge, unwrap, soak again to make thoroughly moist.

Then place it in a warm, well lit place (not in direct sunlight).
Temperatures of 15-20 degrees C. are best for rapid and optimum germination.

Germination may take from 2 to 10 weeks. It is natural that not all the seeds will come at once.

Transplant seedlings into deep 3 inch pots (such as Olive Pots)  to grow on.
Before finally planting with climbing support in a moist, well drained spot or very large pot.

SEED COUNT: 10 seeds per pack approx.
(We always aim to exceed the stated seed count, and give a generous serve).
