Verbascum phoeniceum ‘Roman Candles’
ROMAN CANDLE MULLEINS

Verbascum phoeniceum ‘Roman Candles’ is a mix of all the jewel like colours of lovely Mulleins.

Unique tapestry of jewel like colours

With spires of densely packed flowers in a mix of lavenders, mauves, rose pinks, soft pinks and white colouring.

Constant procession of flowers

‘Roman Candles’ give a constant procession of flower spires, adorning the garden from mid-spring onwards right through summer.
They also make lovely cut flowers for vases. Where they last well.

Hardy & easy to grow

Plants of Verbascum phoeniceum ‘Roman Candles’ are so very hardy and easy to grow in the garden. As well as quick and easy to raise from seed.

Water-wise & drought resistant

Plant ‘Roman Candles’ in Full Sun in the garden.
Or they give an excellent display in a pot because of their long blooming season and neat growth habit.
They are obligingly drought resistant and water-wise plants, that can cope with periods of heat and dry over summer.
‘Roman Candles’ can also tolerate a wide range of soils, including sandy soils and those containing lime.
And plants are soundly frost resistant down to at least -15C, or more depending on conditions.

Evergreen & long blooming

Lovely ‘Roman Candles’ form evergreen perennial clumps, which are dry, heat & frost hardy.
And they are very low maintenance, with an annual chop to remove the finished flower stems being the only work.
They are not hungry plants, so they flower best if grown a little on the lean side.

Loved by bees but not by rabbits & deer

‘Roman Candles’ are rarely if ever bothered by any insect pests or diseases.
Likewise, rabbits and deer find the taste unattractive.
However our beloved bees and butterflies just adore the nectar rich flowers, and especially value them because they are such long blooming energy sources through the warm months.

75cm. High in a procession of flower spires x 45cm. Wide evergreen rosettes of foliage which sit flat to the ground.

SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY

Suitable for beginners & gardening with kids

Sow all year in punnets indoors / scatter in the garden in spring or autumn.

INDOORS: First sow the seeds in a punnet on the surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Then pat gently to the surface to ensure good contact.
Now barely cover the seed with sieved mix / vermiculite / or fine sandy grit.
Because these seeds need light to germinate, so do not bury them.

Now thoroughly moisten the sown punnet by standing in a shallow water bath.
And allowing the moisture to percolate up to the surface from below.

Then place the punnet in a warm, well-lit position (not in direct sun).
You can use a heat mat if you have one, or a warm window sill (out of the sun).

Temperatures of 15-20C approx. are best for rapid and optimum germination.

Continue to keep moist by misting from a spray water bottle as required.
Covering the punnet with a clear plastic lid helps top conserve moisture.

Seedlings emerge in approx. 7-21 days.

SEED COUNT: 500 seeds per pack approx.
(We always aim to exceed the stated seed count and give a generous serve).
