Codonopsis clematidea, Bonnet Bellflower: From the mountains of Asia this rarely seen scrambling –climber is strikingly beautiful. Nodding, palest ice blue bell shaped blooms are exquisitely veined inside with brown– gold and black. These clematis like flowers are borne throughout summer . Ideal to plant over a rock wall or hanging basket where the inner flower can be viewed. Enjoys full sun to light shade in humus rich, moist well drained soil. Mulch well. 90cm H x 60cm W.
Sow indoors or in a propagation in autumn to spring. Surface sow onto good quality seed raising mix that is slightly acid. Do not cover the seed as light is needed for germination. Ideal temperature is 15-20°C. Germination takes 7- 42 days approx. Allow seedlings to grow in the pot for the first year, this will allow the tuber to form. The following year acclimatize and plant out after danger of frost has passed. The plant dislikes root disturbance so best to plant the entire pot contents together rather than splitting.
