Symphyandra hofmannii Hofmann’s Ringed Bellflower –
This pretty Bosnian biennial Campanula relative, is particularly nice. In the first year long-leaved, rather wrinkly foliage rosettes form. The second year brings the bloom. Many upright-to-gently-arching 30-45 cm long stems arise from the basal clump. These are lined with inflated, down-facing buds, which open into a succession of large, ivory white bell shaped blooms for a long period in summer. Enjoys sun to part shade, in good soil with average moisture. Will self seed. 40 cm H x 45 cm W.
symphyandra seeds can be sown at any time but are best sown in winter or early spring to benefit from a cold spell in the wet compost to break their dormancy. We advise covering seeds very thinly with sand or fine grit to about the depth of the seed size. If the seeds do not come up within 6 to 12 weeks the damp seed tray can be given cold treatment in a fridge for about four weeks. They may still take very many months to appear, so please never discard the pot or tray.
