Sowing Advice

Place seeds in a heat proof container and pour very hot (almost boiling!) water over them and leave them to soak for 12-24 hours then fully drain away the water.
Mix together equal parts of good quality seed raising mix and vermiculite or sharp sand. Moisten mix (but not wet), if you can squeeze water out with your hand it is too wet and your seeds may drown and die. Mix the seeds into the moist mixture, making sure that their is enough volume to keep the seeds separated.
Place the seed mixture into a clear plastic bag (zip-lock bags are very useful for this -provided a little gap is left in the seal for air exchange) If it is not a zip-lock type bag it needs to be loosely tied. Date, so that you know when the pre-treatment was started.
The seeds require a cold period to break the dormancy , this is achieved by placing the prepared bag of seeds and mix in the fridge at 4 degrees C for between 60 to 90 days. Quite often seeds germinate in the bag whilst in the fridge, if they do, just remove them from the bag and carefully pot them up. Sow in pots or seed trays of good quality seed raising mix at a depth of about 1 cm . The seed usually germinates in under 4 weeks at 15-20°c. Growth in the first growing season is usually between 20 and 40cm and accelerates in the second and subsequent years. Plant them out into their permanent positions after 2 or 3 growing seasons.
