Campanula punctata f. rubriflora
BEETROOT BELLFLOWERS
Large waxy bells blushed with beetroot shades, over a creamy base.
Large bells blushed beetroot with creamy tips
And each large, blowsy bell is adorned with creamy rimmed edges, and dark beetroot-plum spots inside.
There are no shrinking violets amongst these bold showgirls.
They really know know to put on a show over spring, and summer.
Plus beetroot blushed foliage & stems
Even the foliage and stems are blushed with beetroot red and plummy shades.
So this spectacular bloomer really makes a big impression of colour contrast over the warm months.
Then the rest of the year it is a handy groundcover of low carpeting foliage.
Commercial quality cut flower
The tall stems of big waxy bells make superb and long lasting of cut flowers too.
So they are farmed commercially for the florist trade, as well as making tough and rewarding garden flowers.
The stems are strong and clean – so easy to harvest; and the flowers solid and waxy – so resistant to weather damage and long lasting.
Flower spires over a carpeting groundcover of foliage
While the foliage makes a dense, low carpet year-round.
Then the flower spires tower some 75cm. above on clean stems, just perfect for cutting or leaving to chime in the garden.
Tough, tenacious survivor
Plant in Full Sun to Part Shade.
Campanula punctata f. rubriflora is a tough survivor.
Frost hardy
Because it is robustly frost hardy, and can survive temperatures down to at least -20°C.
Happy in a wide range of soils – but not too rich please
It will also make a go of it in a wide range of soils, even including clay.
But if given too rich a position in can even become a little bit too much of a good thing.
So don’t overfeed, and plant it where you don’t mind it making a bit of a carpet.
Low maintenance
Hardy and easy perennial clump, with little work or maintenance involved.
Harvest the flower stems regularly, or once a round of flowering has finished, shear off the spent flower stems right back to the socks.
Otherwise Campanula punctata f rubriflora is undemanding to grow, and very rewarding for both the garden and vase.
Hardy perennial
Campanula punctata f rubriflora creates bell towers of flowers approx. 75cm. high x 60cm. approx. wide carpet of flat foliage approx. in average garden conditions
Though it can ramble about more if given more water and feed than the bare essentials – not necessary to overfeed or overwater.
SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY
Scatter directly in the garden in spring or autumn
OR
Sow in a punnet indoors at any time when suitable temperatures can be given (18-22°C).
Sow indoors for optimum germination & quick plants: First scatter the seed on the surface of good quality potting mix.
Then gently pat the seed to the surface of the mix to ensure good contact, but do not cover with mix.
Because these seeds need light for germination.
Tip for sowing fine seed: Campanula seed is very fine – so it can be difficult to get out of the bag and sow thinly and evenly.
The best trick is to finely sieve some of the seed raising mix. Put a few pinches in the bag with the seed. Then shake like mad to pick up the seed.
Now add this to an even greater quantity of sieved seed raising mix and finally sow the lot.
You will now be able to spread it further and more evenly.
Now thoroughly moisten the sown punnet by standing it in a shallow water bath.
And allow the moisture to percolate up to the surface of the mix from below.
Then place the moist, sown punnet in a warm, well-lit position.
You can use a heat mat if you have one.
But it is not essential as a warm window sill is also suitable.
Because these seeds are willing germinators.
Temperatures of 18-20°C are best for rapid and optimum germination.
Continue to keep consistently moist by regularly misting from a spray water bottle.
Covering the punnet with a clear plastic lid or bag will also help to maintain necessary consistent moisture.
Seedlings emerge in approx. 14-28 days.
Prick out the seedlings as soon as they develop their first set of true leaves, and pot up to grow on to garden size.
Seed Count: 200 seeds per pack approx.
(We always aim to exceed the stated seed count and give a generous serve).
